Flood
My home is under water. The water came up so fast. We had gotten everything in our basement at least a foot off the ground and put the washer and dryer on cinder blocks. Then was lunch. When we got home Zack and I decided to keep an eye on things and work a little to pass the time. Not too long after we got home our neighbors alerted us that our street was starting to flood. I looked outside and saw water creeping toward the area we all usually parked our cars (everyone had already moved their cars up hill).
We started to scramble to get things ready to leave and the water was rising so, so fast. By the time we got things mostly ready and were going to take the cats out to the cars first, we had to slosh through knee-deep water to get to our cars. Our apartments sit on a man-made hill above the road, but everything around us was flowing with water. We then sloshed back to get my dog, starling, and our suitcase, put them all in another car, and sloshed back. By the time we got all the electrical stuff turned off and our emergency gas switch off the water was mid-thigh high. We then helped a bunch of our neighbors who were also taken by surprise. We also had to help a girl break in to her dad's apartment (who was out of town), but her cats were still inside. By then firefighters were coming in to make sure everyone was getting the hell out of there. I stayed to make sure the last of our neighbors were good to go, while Zack took the kitties to our friend Chris' house, and then waded back across the now crotch-deep water, with a current, to get back to my car.
A bunch of spectators came to look at the water rise, along with residents of the next street up and the firefighters.
That's how I left my home. An island in a river flowing all around it.
I'm just numb right now. All we can do is wait. It's torture.
