But of course, it is... I MADE IT.
It's called Shopping Cart Demolition Derby. Or, Cart Derby for short. It's like jousting, demolition derby, and dog brothers - all rolled into one. We should totally flash-mob walmart and try this out!
Shopping Cart Demolition Derby
Equipment:
Per Team
1 - 1"x36" wooden dowel
1 - Common Shopping Cart
2 - Full head helmets. DOT approved full head/face motorcycle helmets are highly advised.
Appropriate & Required Padding (Listed below)
Objective:
To cause the other competitors to release their baton or cart in such a manner as to disqualify them.
Rules:
- Each team will be made of two competitors - One in the cart, responsible for offensive action (The "Swinger") and one outside the cart, responsible for movement on the playing field (The "Driver").
- The swinger will be required to keep both hands gripping the baton at all times. Removing either hand for any period of time, for any reason, will disqualify the swinger.
- The driver will be required to keep one hand (The "Affixed" hand) in contact with the steering handle of the cart at all times. Removing this hand, for any reason, will disqualify the driver.
- Both competitors must be disqualified to fully exclude a team - i.e., a driver with no swinger is still in play and capable of winning. A swinger with no driver is still in play and capable of winning.
- Neither the driver, nor the swinger, is allowed to affix their hands to the baton/cart by any artificial means(Glue, tape, velcro, etc).
- The use of "tacky" gloves is allowed - i.e. wide reciever gloves, rubber dot gloves.
- Both the swinger and the driver are required to wear all required padding and protective equipment during play.
- All padding and protective equipment is to be kept in safe, working order, and should be inspected prior to play by competition officials.
- The driver must have his affixed hand and forearm covered in a red or blaze orange color from elbow down, including the hand.
- The driver is allowed to wear a hard guard on his non-affixed forearm for the purposes of blocking strikes.
- The hard guard is not allowed to extend further than elbow to wrist, without restricting movement.
- The driver and swinger are allowed to wear full fingered gloves, providing no more than 3/16" of padding on any surface.
- The driver and swinger are both required to wear padding of 3/4" around the kidney area. This padding should be made of a flexible material so as to not inhibit movement, and should extend from just below the ribcage to the waist, and fully circle the abdomen.
- The driver and swinger are allowed to wear up to 3/16" padding on any surface of the body not covered by a hard guard or kidney padding.
- All swingers must grip their baton in the last 1/3 of its length. Sliding or repositioning the hands is considered releasing the baton, and is grounds for disqualification.
- A strip of red or blaze orange shall be affixed to the baton at the 12" mark from one end. Swingers are only allowed to hold the baton from this mark down. Having a hand placed above this mark is considered to be proof of having released the baton, and will be grounds for disqualification.
Field of Play:
- The field of play should measure 30' x 20'.
- There should be no more than 10 teams, of two competitors each, per round.
- If more than 10 teams are present to play, the game should be reduced into heats of no more than 10 teams each, and multiple rounds completed to determine a winner.
- The top 2 teams from each heat shall be retained in play. The 3rd through 10th positions shall be disqualified and removed from play.
- After all heats have been run, the top 2 teams from every heat are to be entered together into another heat, as a deciding round.
- If enough heats are run to produce more than 10 remaining top 2 teams, then the process starts over again, until 10 or less top 2 teams can compete in a final heat to decide a winner.
Method of Play:
Upon entry to the playing field, all teams should be positioned evenly around the perimiter of the field, with the driver end of the cart being closest to the center of the field - i.e. "Facing Out". When all teams are ready, the officials are to call for the competition to begin. At this time, all teams are to enter into play. The swinger is allowed to strike any other competitor on any part of their body with their baton, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF HEADSHOTS. Any player found to be purposely throwing headshots will have his entire team disqualified immediately. Swingers are required to hold their baton within the last 1/3 of length on either end. Sliding or repositioning the hands above the 1/3 mark is to be considered releasing the baton, and shall call for disqualification. Swingers are only allowed to block with their own batons, drivers are allowed to block with their hard guards. Any surface of the baton may be used to strike other players, including end-on "stabbing" manuevers. The drivers of the teams are allowed to move around any area of the playing field, as long as they remain in bounds. Placing one foot out of bounds, of moving more than 1/2 of their cart out of bounds shall be grounds for disqualification. Cart-To-Cart ramming is allowed as an offensive tactic for drivers. Cart-To-Driver ramming is to be avoided. Any driver found to be purposely ramming other drivers with his own cart will have his entire team immediately disqualified. Play is to continue until all other teams have been disqualified, either from releasing their equipment or traveling out-of-bounds. The final two teams are required to continue play to determine a 1st and 2nd place. These two teams shall be retained in play for the deciding round. To help even the odds in the deciding round, players are required to switch positions. The former driver is now to be the swinger, and vice versa.
