Being the creation of depression and solitude, he was created after the depression set in of losing Ashley. He was created to ward of his friends from entering a battle ground in a dimension leading to Carmelo's mind as he waged war on himself, believing that it was his fault for all the trouble that he had recently experienced. William couldn't keep three of Carmelo's friends away, and when they returned Carmelo to the realm of sanity, they became friends with William. He made friends with the residents of the place Carmelo was living at the time.
