r.i.p. frances bay ('twin peaks', 'seinfeld', etc.)
Just read that Frances Bay, one of my favorite character actresses, passed away Thursday. She was 92, and as recently as last year was still working.
She first caught my attention in the small but creepy part of Mrs. Tremond (aka Mrs. Chalfont) in the TV show "Twin Peaks" (she would reprise the role in the movie version, "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me"). Later I realized that I'd already seen her in numerous other shows/movies, including "Happy Days" (as Fonzie's grandmother) and the original version of "The Karate Kid". After "Peaks" she continued to show up in many other things I watched, including "The X-Files", "ER", and most memorably, "Seinfeld", on which she played the elderly woman who Jerry mugged for a marble rye. Most recently, she had a recurring (although non-speaking) role as 'Aunt Ginny' on ABC's sitcom "The Middle".
She rarely had very large roles, but I always loved it when she was in something because she invariably made it more interesting. I'll miss that.
