ARTIST QUESTION 2: How do you GRIP your pencil and pen?
at first I was like ◔ω◔ A few months ago, I realized you could hold a pencil and pen differently than the way I always did. It was around this time I noticed how hard I was gripping my pencils, and why pressure sensitivity seemed difficult to me. I use a tripod grip, often combined with the death grip (squeezing the pen too hard, not relaxed) which made it difficult to do light strokes. Now I like to experiment with all the different grips! You should try too!
With that in mind, lets move on to the questions and discussion!
Please take the time to look at the photos in this article before you answer so we can all get an idea of what we're talking about. You don't have to read it, but figure out which grip you use so you can name it.
Which grip do you use when you sketch?
Which grip do you use when you line?
Which grip do you use when you color?
Is the grip different when you use a tablet versus traditional pencils?
How about when you write? Is it a different grip than when you draw?
I love hearing from everyone, so leave a comment! Especially if you use something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! WHOA! If you could take a quick photo or sketch your own hand, that would be really great too! Don't be shy!
Yesterday's question was how do you have your tablet oriented on your desk

with my hand
I only change my grip when I'm doing special curves, or letter types I'm trying to do.
Nothing changes, just like a standard pencil, no matter whether it's digital or not.
I overhand and underhand when I sketch, as well as a modified tripod/underhand (that I tend to use for everything else) in which I hold the pencil fairly loosely under the first two fingers of my hand and let it rest on my ring finger, with the back end of the pencil resting in the crook between my thumb and index finger.
index holds along it
both about an inch away from the tip
push the pen into the upper first knuckle of my middle finger
other part of the pen rests on the inner thumb part or nape or whatever the biological term is for that part you can make a 'C' with
index and middle angle the pen
so I would say extended tripod or something? that person in the photos has much bigger hands than me though, and is also left handed apparently which means they automatically don't use the same grip
the grip for using a tablet is different for me than pencils because tablet pens are like sausages in comparison, plus there's that button down there which usually means a slightly higher grip than normal.
I also use the same grip for writing and drawing
ALTHOUGH, I do believe I switch to a normal tripod grip with more emphasis on the thumb when I need hard and high pressure, but I haven't done anything like that in forever
