I don't even.... What a night

Okay, so here goes... I need to get this down while it is still fresh in my mind.
It is 4:30am, and I have now been up for about an hour and a half. We were startled awake by our fire alarm going off, and someone pounding and screaming at our door. It was the kind of terror scream you only hear in movies. BT went to the door to see what was going on, and tried to crack the door as I was throwing on pants and a shirt. Just as the door cracked someone burst into our apartment.
She was a mid to late 20 year old girl, shorter with blond hair who ran into our kitchen, grabbed a knife from my knife block and was screaming that we needed to call 911 someone was trying to kill her. BT called 911 and had them send everything they have to our place then hung up the phone. We were trying to talk to her and calm her down to find out what is going on but there was no way we could. She was babbling incoherently about how her entire family was murdered by some guys she went to school with, and that she had been thrown from a car just off the 401 highway (about 8km from my apartment) yet she had no bruising, cuts or lacerations. We tried to keep her focus but she was darting from room to room and brandishing the knife. Finally I called 911 again to get more of the story to them and she grabbed the other phone and started talking to them.
We were able to keep her distracted for a bit and I finally got her to give me the knife. I set it on the counter and tried to continue to talk to her as she was on the phone with the operator. When BT heard the knocks at the door of the firemen, he went to open the door and she once again became highly agitated, ran into the kitchen (CURSE YOU LONG PHONE CORDS) to grab 2 fresh knives from my knife block. The fire department was getting ready to pry bar the door open when BT was able to convince them that it was not in their best interest as there was a woman in here keeping everyone at bay with 2 of our knives.
The firemen backed off and BT went outside to talk to them leaving me in the apartment alone with her. I sure as hell was not going to let her be alone in my place with the knives as no one would be able to get back in without getting stabbed. I kept her focused on the phone, even though with every single noise that was made she was jumping up and brandishing the knives again. This went on for what seemed like ages, but was probably only about 5 minutes at most before the police arrived.
The officer cracked the door a bit and she bolted up off the arm of my chair and ran to the door. She was screaming about these people trying to kill her who had already killed her entire family, and the officer was calm as he talked to her finally getting her to give him the knives.
She handed me the phone and I talked to the operator as she was taken from our apartment by the police to 2 waiting cruisers. The operator was asking me who she was and what was happening so I relayed that we had no clue just who she was and she just burst into our place babbling and highly distraught. She told me to talk to the officers and hung up the phone.
As a matter of thoroughness the officer came in to look in the apartment to make sure that no one else was in here, and we both went outside.
I was informed by the officer that it appeared that the woman was in the midst of a schizophrenic break, and that we were pretty lucky that it ended like it did. They took the girl off for evaluation and the officer got a quick summation from BT and myself, taking our phone number for good measure which means we are probably going to be getting a call soon from the police wanting a formal recounting of events for a statement.
As I finish this it is 5am, and I am wide awake still… In fact, I have to get up and start getting ready for work in about an hour so I think that I am going to not be getting any more sleep tonight. What a night, I guess I got a solid 3 hours sleep, that should do me right?

At least you got a pretty interesting story out of it all.
Perhaps this is a good excuse to get a chain or bar for your door as a backup in the future?
You do have a point though. I guess what I meant is use it more on a case-by-case basis. For example if you are awakened by frantic pounding on your door at 4am and the peep yields nothing, throw it on before peeking out perhaps? ^.^
Schizophrenic or not, you guys were there for another person in a time of great need (and how could you possibly know better beforehand). Nice to know karma was on your side early this morning.
I am sorry that I didn't get to see you either. Sadly weekdays are work days for this bear, but I am sure that we will see each other next time you are in town.
