I think of it as more Karma based. Walking under ladders or a black cat crossing your path don't really mean anything.
Do good, receive good. Do bad, receive bad.
Walking under ladders as a superstition is to keep people from being injured from falling objects.

Luck? Nah- I more believe that things tend to go well or bad randomly in clusters though.

Just to be safe though, you can throw salt over your shoulder. Even if you didn't spill any. :)
