Just forget i said that... Bad wording. I meant that shouldn't happen unless there were a more serious problem with your hardware or if the data was corrupted.

you need a new hard drive

Actually I have seen that happen before.
Try to install windows = fail.
Try to install different version of windows = fail.
Install ubuntu = success.
Try to install windows again = fail.
That laptop now happily runs linux. Whenever I try to get windows running on it again (back to its original recovery CD even) it fails now.
For some unknown reason the hardware now refuses even to boot windows from an external usb drive source.
But it likes Ubuntu 11.04.

I play games so I can't use linux.

Many games run under linux.
No games at all run on a dead computer. (well except for maybe doorstop, but that one is fairly lame anyway)
