I like the way you've been doing it, but I understand wanting to do a paintery detailed kind since it looks so spiffy when done right. except it's an enormous pain in the butt D: I normally do a quick paint, though lately I was trying to color more like I was using colored pencils since I'm so sketchy :<
(even though since I've been mucking around with digital since some years ago, I'm kinda inconsistent)
(and this depends on what I'm using, OC or ancient potatochop)

the only thing that I know works good most every time is to have a huge canvas, like 3000 px, then shrink later to hide all the fuckups x3

Why not try drawing an outline, and then practice several different colors/shades on it and see what looks best?
