As for sleeping-issues, what's your evening routine before you hit the hay? Perhaps rearranging tasks or the like could help.

Binaural beats work good, but you need headphones to get the full advantage of them and that kinda gets annoying. There's also Trazadone, 10mg of that at night knocks my pony butt right out. Non narcotic, non addictive. Swwweeeet. ;)

If you're looking for true ambient, try the master himself: Brian Eno. When CD's were first introduced (back during the Dark Ages, remember, kids?), he released a "CD-only" production called "Thursday Afternoon" -- a single piece that is 61 minutes long. It's not something that you listen to actively; it's more like what Gabriel Faure called "furniture music" -- something "as interesting as it is ignorable." There's no beat at all; it simply flows, like a thick warm liquid (no sexual entendres intended).

There is also "Vostok," by Craig Padilla. Effectively a musical description of the Vostok glacier formation. There is a slow beat to this, not as prominent as the binaural beats in the selection you posted, but there.

Finally, Steve Roach has created a number of exceptional ambient works, including the beautiful "Structures From Silence" and his "Immersion" series.

I listen to ambient electronica when I write. I find it both soothing and stimulating.
