I HAVE THE HTTYD CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

General
I hope I have time today to watch it.
I'm going to crack "Book of Dragons" right now just to get the silly stuff out of the way so I can savor GOTNF later.
BUT OMG YAY
EDIT:
Here's some review-esque bull- nothing too revealing, I don't think, especially since, as Malus says, NO SPOILER BECAUSE NO PLOT.
Well, that was actually pretty fun. Given it was like, 60% old footage with voiceovers and stuff.
It was cute, and far more palatable than I was expecting, though the way it's put together, flip flopping between old 3D renders, new 3D renders, old concept art, and like three styles of 2D animated segments , is really kind of jarring.
A la "Boneknapper", the clip is mostly 2D animated segments (far more stylized than Boneknapper's), mostly cartoony gags about Bork, the Viking who first compiled the Dragon Manual.
Bork is... conceptually, almost identical to Hiccup of the books, aside from the fact that he's a full-grown hairy man. He even has a helmet with one horn missing, and some of his misadventures are fairly familiar (such as a Darkbreather (here, a Scauldron) eating his boat).
So I was pleased with the Cowell-esque air that remained. There are blatantly horribly misinformed scenes with corn (apparently Nightmares like corn??) and chocolate: American foods- which COWELL TOTALLY WOULD'VE DONE.
Funnily enough, there was also a gag with A NADDER STEALING A SANDWICH FROM PRETTY MUCH THE SAME ANGLE as one of the drawings I have posted here. There's also some stuff that will reaffirm the suspicions of some friends of mine- and some stuff about brushing a dragon's teeth, which is obviously relevant to my interests.
There's even a short, comical vore gag with slimy vomit. Yay.
Most of the dragons are just references to the actual ones used in the movie, or those mentioned/depicted in the movie's dragon manual. Overall, there's technically not a whole lot of new material here- just some random tricks like OMG THEY LIKE THEIR BACKS SCRATCHED: THIS IS COMPLETELY FUNCTIONAL KNOWLEDGE FOR YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW.
There's some new music, which jars with the old stuff a bit because it's obviously synth and not orchestral, but it puts up a good fight and does a decent job of blending in with Powell's precedents.
EDIT: Gift of the Night Fury
Oh man, what to say about this one...
Too short! They crammed probably at least 40 minutes of story into 22, so the storytelling is really rushed and rough. Which is a shame, really, because it's a cute, even touching story- there's just no time at all to savor it. The long, meditative moments and profound montages of the original movie are pretty much lost here, and pretty much every second is jammed with either characters jabbering away like there's a time limit- nearly all of it "I HAVE TO SAY THIS TO THE VIEWER SO THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON" dialogue- or quick and to the point action, and the impact of the plot suffers for it.
Pretty much every issue I had with this was the glaring fact that they needed to SLOW THE FRICK DOWN and give us more material to help us identify with the characters and the situations taking place.
If you've seen the trailers and such, you have a decent idea of how the plot goes. It's not incredibly surprising, save for one bit at the end.
Malus, the end is probably going to piss you off. XD
So the plot did suffer immensely from OMG GOTTA GO FAST. They also ripped nearly the entire soundtrack from the original movie- which isn't entirely bad, except that some of the tracks really don't go with the scenes they're paired with. Of course, that might just be my uberfan-know-the-soundtrack-backwards-and-forwards ears talking.
The animation is pretty decent, for what this is. There are a lot of really adorable physical comedy bits with Hiccup- it's always refreshing to see your screen-friends pulled into some new expressions and poses (he falls over a lot XD). Occasionally the characters look oddly bug-eyed, but all in all they're fun to watch.
I don't know if I'd recommend you see this for the plot. But if Hiccup/Toothless (or general dragon/human) fluff melts your heart, they managed to squeeze in some really adorable moments to make you squee. Like that free-fall at the end... they didn't show all of it in the trailers- but holy hell it gets like WAY cooler/cuter.
ALSO THERE'S A BIT WHERE TOOTHLESS ENGULFS HICCUP'S HEAD WITH HIS MOUTH.
and it is quite slimy.
(and wetness and wet hair is really hard for animators, so it looks sketch- but REALLY exaggerated.)
So no, it wasn't as good as I expected, but yes, there are some good times to be had here. The plot is blah, but there are several scenes worth squeeing over again for sure.

FA+

Well, I mean, I would pay it, but that's me. $30 strikes me as really pretty steep. You're getting like, 40 minutes of okay content. If you're a huge fan of the movie, you'll probably like it- it just depends on how much you're willing to shell out for some cute Toothless-playing-with-Hiccup moments.
I liked that little "Dawwww" moment at the end of Gift. It was so touching, but I wish it was dragged out longer.
I liked how surprisingly graphic the vomit was. Good stuff.
I think everything would've been so much better if we'd been given time to really savor it. The short should've been like twice as long, with the same material- just more substance added. I mean, it's good stuff, but we're forced to jump along to the next development before we're done comprehending the previous one, and that's sad.
Plus. they should know how to do good slime. I mean, this is the company that made Bob The Blob from Monsters Vs Aliens! D8
Also, he's pretty much licking Hiccup's face at that part, so I'm terribly happy about it.
Well, Hiccup's wet hair always looks like hell- but I mean, hair AND wet in general is hard to do effectively, so I understand that. XD
Licking Hiccup's face? It's effectively engulfing his entire head, and putting the helmet back with his tongue. It's probably as voretastic of a moment we're ever going to get *knock on wood*. XD
By the way, if you watch the "sneek peek" it's a few behind the scenes work of the Stadium Show. There's a shot of Toothless that just looks.... awful. It's like someone drew fanart of "REALISTIC" Toothless, and they're making it. Gosh, I hope that was NOT Toothless I was seeing. Shall I screen cap it?
Though there IS endless potential for fun maw-related stuff of all kinds.
OMG that's so weird. He looks like a lion with muscled-out wings. Very cat-like, not enough lizard-like. I'm not incredibly sure why that's necessary... a bit disappointing, though it'll still be interesting to see the wings attached (hopefully they're bigger than in that graphic...) and how lithe the movements are. If he cant move swiftly, then it's fail all over.
Kind of interesting that they'd do that with Toothy. Not only is he ICONIC, he's also one of the few dragons in the flick that actually does look like his musculature and stuff would actually physically work in reality (unlike the Nightmare or the Zipplebacks, for example) and therefore in theory would require fewer changes in order to be physically possible.
But seriously LOL FLYING VIKINGS WTF??? What the hell are they doing jumping thirty feet in the air?? XD WHOOSH
But yeah, there are so many things they can do with it.
Non-vore people really do find this stuff and this concept disturbing after all XD
(For some reason I'm reminded of the Where The Wild Things Are movie, which had a graphic protection-vore scene, that even most vore fans I read from seemed to find unsettling. I mean, I liked it, but...)
I mean, I could be speaking too soon, since a lot of Toothless' gross-out jokes seem to do with his upper-digestive tract, but somehow I think that's probably too far to take it with little kids watching, Eating people's most likely going to be left as a way for the villain dragons to kick puppies.
It's like they know me or something.
Ask Malus how he saw it. XD
http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/.....hatch_orig.jpg renember this?
It was obvious that Hiccup's head was wet, and that his helmet was back.
There was only two ways:
-The helmet had just been taken out of the water, but it was unlikely since this take place in the great hall.
-Toothless just put the helmet on Hiccup's head after carried it (the helmet) in his mouth. But it was also unlikely because there is TOO MUCH SLIME. But is this really a problem :) ?
There is TOO MUCH SLIME. But that's why it's awesome. They did that INTENTIONALLY, for someone's gag factor, and for me to go "eheeheheh."
GOTNF is basically a must-see if you enjoyed those cute Hiccup/dragon interactions, and it's really quite sweet. It IS rushed to fit into the time slot.
It's probably one of the more fun 40 minutes you'll spend, though.
Things like:
- all the sketches of toothless in hiccup's house
- dragons of a same specie with colours and physics differences, there is a blue nightmare, a brown zippleback, Nadders have a sexual dysmorphism...
-when the egg is about to eplode to Hiccup face, you can see the gronckle behind him is like "ho sh*t!"
-ruff and tuff fighting in the very last scene in the great hall
-Such things as steam, flakes...
-this https://blufiles.storage.live.com/y.....he%20Terror%20(1280x720).jpg?psid=1
The thing is that you have to pause the movie each 5 seconds to notice them.
Still need to catch Ruff n Tuff- but they seem to do that A LOT anyway. XD
I need to go through and slow down that Great Hall scene, just because there seems to be a lot of cute that goes by too quickly to be comprehended.
Well, the voices still globally decent, HAROLD sounds like if he is 3 years older while it's the same doubler, Astrid regained her voice from HTTYD, (that wasn'tn her in boneknapper, but she had like only one line in this movie-I think we're sinking- or something like that), slotnout voice have changed and his new voice SUCKS, and maybe also stoick.
Now the best parts THE TRANSLATIONS.
I was surprised to hear that snoglletog still snoglltog, While yacknog become ...Yackolack ...Why? just why?
Talking about this drink, astrid now make puns "maybe you rather taste a punch in the face?" turned into " maybe you prefer that I serve you a peach juice in the peer?" (peach and peer are a famillary way to said punch and face), funny, but not rude enough.
The most raped line, and I don't forgive this, is "your dragon cant go anywere without you." it becames "Your dragon follows you everywhere like a puppy" THIS IS STUPID! You don't get that toothless doesn't have the choice! It sounds like it's his choice, and we're not supposed to know it at this moment of the short.
Well the rest of the lines are correct "are you crying?" has been translated in a ruder way, good point.
Now the dragons names:
Meatlug = Bulldogre (bulldog+ orgre) kinda pokemonish but why not, it's more threatening (actually I dont have a clue of what meatlug means, I know what meat is but...)
Stormfly= tempête (storm, or simply tempest) stormfly was litterally impossible to translate.
Bonesleg (the nightmare, I'm not sure if it's his/her name) = Crocsphère (fangs sphere) fangs is a good choice but... why sphere? maybe I didn't get it well.
Oh and for the first time, the title is translated well, le cadeau du furie nocturne. Yep in france it's Nocturnal fury .(It's more scientific, I kinda like, and it could imply that they are other kinds of furys).
Wow! I like that "peach juice in the peer" pun a LOT actually, but sadly it's grossly out of character! XD Astrid is far more blunt than all that. XD And I'm someone who has her pun a lot more than I should. XDXD
And UGH! That has significant bearing on even the plot and everything. That's an unfortunate change. XP
Haha, I have no idea what Meatlug is either. "Lug" can be a verb that is sort of colloquial for carrying something heavy, or a noun for like, a bicycle part or a part similar to a nut or screw. I'm assuming it's more derived from the former. Fishlegs' dragon was called "Horrorcow" in the novels, so I guess this may be an improvement. XD
I think our Nightmare was called Hookfang. LOL NIGHTMARES LIKE GLOBES.
Yeah, I've seen several translations of Night Fury, including an attempted pure Latin one, and they usually have that reversed order and look very much like something out of a science book.
Well, HAROLD save it a bit then, his conversation with astrid is well translated.
It's your order that is reversed .
I wonder what the pure latin is :p
I don't remember it too well. XD
Hear vikings talking about vacations is weird.
THAT MEANS DRAGONS ARE THE CLOSEST THING VIKINGS HAVE TO MATTRESSES.
This is weird. They could at least have ...straw.
THEY ARE SLEEPING BAGS
I mean, might as well sleep on the floor- it'd be way less drafty! Or let the dragon in the house and sleep next to him. XD
Being eaten is like, a massive improvement, fish-smell and all. XD
This will be for the likely "toothless childhood" short, or an episode of ROB.
That would be fun, and also a great excuse to use BABY NIGHT FURY without actually introducing a new one into the plotline. XD
