Help Save the Internet from being Censored!!!

The US Congress is ready to pass the Stop Online Piracy Act which would enable them to shut down such sites as YouTube simply because users upload such things as My Little Pony episodes or even do karaoke of a copyrighted song.
If you live in the US please help us all by letting your representatives know you won't stand for them censoring our free internet. If you live somewhere else, please back us up in any way you can. It would a major blow to ALL of us if this legislation passes since so many of the sites that would be affected are based in the US.
Go to this site (DemandProgress.org) and send a letter to congress. Please! It's for ALL of us!! http://act.demandprogress.org/letter/finish_strong/?akid=1026.218994.dftKL7&rd=1&t=3

right now, if im reading the bill correctly it looks like it first will block websights like the pirate bay, but it really dose not seem to have clear wording on what else it could do. Soo im signing this stuff.

OP
Thank you! This kind of legislation scares the crap out of me. It has the potential to be devastating to one of the most important freedoms we have. And that is the freedom of information exchange. Remember, the first thing to do if you're going to control the population is control their access to information. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you will, but I do believe there is a concerted effort to just this worldwide.

Done. Thankfully, it would probably be rather difficult to completely enforce legislation like this, due to the very nature of the Intertubes. For example, look up the Streisand Effect.

OP
I see what you're saying, but in this case they would be jailing people for their uploads and severely hampering the operation or even shutting down sites that the people who upload the proscribed content use. Or are you saying that people would retaliate in such numbers that it would be impossible to enforce for that reason?

The Streisand Effect basically says that once an effort to eliminate something from the Internet becomes publicized, it becomes self-defeating, as the information in question will be mirrored and copied and repeated so much that it cannot possibly be completely eliminated. So yes, it would be your second statement.

OP
That would happen right up to the point where they shut down the offending site. This kind of legislation would give them the power to do just that. then it would be eliminated from that source anyway.

Yes...only to be mirrored on another site, and another, with numerous servers in various jurisdictions. The very decentralization of the Internet is what defies all attempts to regulate it. You could go the Chinese way, but I think that would be a bit too much in this country.
