I mean your hardware specifications. CPU brand and model, amount of RAM, disk size.

If he's reformatting, could it be referring to the Norton Antivirus that comes pre-installed on computers? That's the only thing I can think of for that message to come into play. If it's not then... Could you get him to give us more information as MarkShark suggested?

I have an idea on how to fix this, but it is not only a longshot, but something that should only be done as a last resort if the problem is very, very serious, I am going to try a program called minitool partitionwizard, and the operations I have pending at this very moment are extremely unstable- one wrong move and everything goes dead, and by the time you get done reading this, I will have already started it.

That error can only be caused by that. If you wish to install XP... Install it from boot menu, not by running the setup within the OS you're currently using...

The easiest thing to do is back up your data ya wanna keep first. get the xp disc and boot your system from the optical drive. now just follow installation instructions till ya get to the point where ya select the place of installation. Format the harddrive [or] partition ya wanna install it on. This will get rid of everythin even the 'anti virus'. now just install away…. Afterwards put the backed up data into the new win xp installation.

Ugh, for the last time, I have successfully made the repairs to my computer and this is not even my issue any more.
My current issue is that I have data I encrypted on another system and I don't have any of the .cer files or decryption keys for it, I need to know how to use the CIPHER program in MS-DOS to decrypt my data even though the keys required for decrypting the data no longer exist!

decryptin? that I'm not too knowledgeable bout. What do ya mean by cypher program? from what I know, ya'd have to use the 'forth' computing language for this. The help I can provide really depends on the complexity of decryption…. are the keys asymmetric algorithms? (different keys used for encryption n decryption?)

I'm only specifically a windows repair man, but know that this is supposed to decrypt rsa algorithms. i am not sure if it supports 1024-bits, but give it a try
