A back attack from stealth with a dagger only.

I know that much but do you just do a regular type attack or power attack?

Regular, don't do power. Though if it's a special attack, it usually skips to a cutscene, regardless if you use power or regular.

It's a regular attack, but I think it has to do something with the damage output of the weapon.

For example, I can Backstab Bandits, but not Bandit Thugs because I can't kill them in a single sneak attack hit.

Yea I hear mixed responses. Like you only get the cut scene if it's a one shot kill and that backstab doesn't necessarily have a special animation other than the 6x multiplier. "Backstab" itself has no cutscene, but a certain attack from behind does; and if you switch to third-person, most "finishers" do have cutscenes.
