Now, normally, I wouldn't post links to websites asking for your name and email address, but this one is for a good cause that I'm sure many of you can relate to in some form or another. See, my school's LGBTA Resource Center currently shares a very small office with another campus organization. In the past few weeks, the other group's leaders have been displaying a hostile attitude towards members of our GSA (student group) and LGBTA Commission (Faculty and staff group) who make use of the Resource Center. Members of the opposing organization have been witnessed placing posters in such a way that they cover the Resource Center banner, hiding LGBT materials, and removing the rainbow flag and placing it..... guess where. IN THE CLOSET!!!
You have to understand that both groups have allotted times to use the space, and the other group has other, much larger spaces that are exclusively theirs. However, that group has permission from the higher-ups to take over the shared space whenever they want during Finals Week. If members of the GSA are working at the Resource Center, they will be required to leave, and there's nothing they can do about it.
Members of the GSA and LGBTA Commission are working together to defend our school's safe space for LGBT individuals. However, we need your help, too. One of our members started an online petition to try to convince the higher-ups that we need the space, and that having a safe space on campus has the potential to be a life-or-death situation. Below is a direct link to the petition. I ask that you at least read it, even if you have no intention of signing. Thank you for your support.
