Explaination/ Update
We've lived here four years with no discernible changes in habits and we got a notice two days ago that we were being evicted. Now, I'm not sure why, they won't tell me (I thought it was one thing, but now I'm suspecting it's something else and that they just allowed us to renew the lease so that they could get more money out of us until they actually needed us out)... nowhere before had they mentioned that being a possibility. They also gave us the lamest eviction notice. Wrong city, this is not 1911 and for a year lease we need to get at least sixty days instead of thirty.
I called the company, but its cold and distant and doesn't give a damn. I've never even met the landlord or the manager. In order to even talk to them, the flaky receptionist told me I had to write a letter and that the manager would be more than willing to talk about us staying (what? i don't even really know what the problem is but now I can beg for mercy?). Well, that wastes precious days when someone thinks we need to be out in thirty. I sent them a faxed letter yesterday. I wonder if they'll just ignore it.
Here's to going out today and finding a new place and citing 'management issues' or 'want to be closer to work' as the reason for moving abruptly. Because, goddamn. I know they're used to working with people who are illegal and don't question anything that looks official and that our last name SOUNDS FOREIGN, but WOW.
If you live in the Chicago area, do not rent from this company, they are downright retarded.

Right at this point, I don't care. They're treating me like garbage. I'm pretty sure that I'm being 'evicted' because our roof is falling in, and they fixed it as much as they could without completely remodeling or working from the inside or on the foundation (which has significantly shifted). The roof of the building across the way just fell in and ours cracked during snowpocolypse last year. They're probably just trying to cover their asses instead of wait for it to fall in and get a lawsuit from us.
Fuck their safe-fuzzy feelings. Get the Better Business Bureau, call the building inspection office for your city about that roof, go over said company's head. That'll galvanize'em into less lame answers right quick.
Okay so we have a year long lease that we're not allowed to smidge out of without terrible fees like a phone contract. What does that mean?
Yeah, I don't know. They called me today and told me they'd love to have us continue renting and would reinstate our lease if we got the apartment to 'model showing' condition. We've lived here four years... it's got four years of being lived in. It's going to involve moving everything out, painting and cleaning the carpets anyway, so we might as well move to a new place.
There was this time that the girls had those gooey granola bars and ground them into the carpet and despite cleaning it there is just evidence of granolapocolypse. Inevitable orange soda/cola/grape juice spills are also a problem.
