This almost goes along the lines of teenagers having babies. They like to think that its all cute and adorable but totally disregard that it is a work effort to raise a kid. Much like a dog it needs to be trained, so on and so forth. I don't need to explain this obviously.

But Cumberland County is also a big hot-spot for owners that want to "rid" themselves of the burden. So what do they do? They go down to two or three state parks within a 10 mile radius, un-collar the dog and let it into the wild. It's like the wild boar situation down in Texas, only with doggies in a state park. They run rampant, the shelters yoke em up and they fester in the shelters.

It's not the shelters fault, nor the breeders, its the owners themselves. Of course you want authorities to do something about it or the ASPCA patrols, but due to government economies the peace-keepers are the first to be deducted. Because of this, there is less patrols and stuff being done about it. So most likely this petition won't do anything (I could be wrong) and this ever growing shelter population problem will continue to grow.

But hey, lets start with the prisons as well. If gang-bangers, drug dealers, murderers, rapists, Chi-mo's, and repeated offenders should be under this new law as well. If they can make bail in 72 hours, they're euthanized.

In Spain if you're cought abandoning a pet you must pay a 6000€ fine (arround 8000$) even you can go to jail or comunity services. But anyway most dogs are abandoned an nobody realizes... Here dogs are kept as much as they can in animal shetlers... but they are crowed....

I know, it's ridiculous. Murderers can sit in jail their wholes lives (hey, free room and food) while we pay for it, but innocent dogs have to be killed, simply because their owners didn't want them. Well that's humans for you.

every so often the florida senate tries to pass a breed ban law. Luckily they have failed so far. but i suspect that one day they will get this law passed and most large breed dogs will get banned.

there are several other states that are also trying to get similar breed ban laws on their books.

The breed ban typically isn't on owning a certain breed, unless you live in an apartment complex or something along those lines. This one NC is trying to pass is on keeping those breeds in shelters.

I understand the one in NC, and the one that pops up every so often in Florida is for the ownership of those breeds. If passed it would be illegal to own those breeds in florida. Pit-bull terriers are the #1 on the hit-list here. The problem with breed specific laws is that it punishes ALL dogs of certain breeds and the responsible owners of said dogs. The laws need to be written so that the owners are held responsible for the actions of their pets even the little ones like poms, min-pins, and chihuahuas for example. It is not the dogs fault it behaves the way they do. It is owners who are not capable of taking care of; or properly training the dogs. It is also owners who deliberately abuse or mistreat the animals that are at fault. I own an Alaskan malamute one of the k9's on the CDC's dangerous breeds list. He is the biggest chickenshit dog i have ever seen. IF that ban in Fla were to become law shelters would be required to immediately kill any animinal caught/turned in on the banned list. They might hold them for 3 days but i doubt it. I am deliberately not using the terms "put down" and "euthanasia".

Even if a shelter is crowded due to people abandoning pets, a breed ban is not the solution. Fortunately where I live, there currently is no breed ban. If there were, I would have never met my perfect dog, as she is half German Shepherd, half Alaskan Husky - two breeds on that list. Banning breeders isn't a solution either, as then you are restricting an area from owning certain breeds. There should be stricter breeding regulations, though so that breeders don't over do it and over populate an area. Humans simply need to be more responsible, but I realize that's asking for too much and makes too much sense.

That's really disgusting.. these dogs only get a bad rep due to the people who mistreat them.. there is nothing wrong with ANY breed of dog, you can easily raise a pitbull to be a loving family member and a big mush. Sadly people are ignorant and try to pass these unjust laws. I'll do what I can to help <3
