Don't Sell Toys
As some may have surmised by my whiny comments on various forums here and there, I was rather upset to see that the nominations for the 2011 Annie Awards (from ASIFA) came out -- and there was not a single nomination in any category for My Little Pony -- Friendship is Magic. After a little more reflection, it occurred to me that there were also no nominations for the re-boot of Thundercats. Then Sy Sable pointed out that there may well be a connection between these two shows and what the animation Illuminati, er, intelligentsia don't like about them: They're both ostensibly designed to sell toys. They're not 'creator driven', to use that term that CartoonBrew.com loves to throw around. As an employee at Sam Ash Music, I'm rather familiar with the phenomenon... When various cool-people publications do their annual 'Best Local Music Store', they refuse to look at anything but Mom-and-Pop shops... that is, refuse to consider our store. Why? Well, because, being part of a corporation (even a family owned and operated one) we can't POSSIBLY care more about quality than we care about making a fast buck. I truly love people sometimes...

How do things get nominated for that, anyway?

There is a call of nominees that comes out every year, and during this period entries are sent in to ASIFA Hollywood. The nominees are then put into a jury system for peer review which selects the nominees, except certain honorary awards, Best TV Show, and Best Feature, which are decided on by the board of directors.

There's a second, more likely, possibility here. Hasbro may not have submitted the program for the Annies. There were a number of times when I was working the awards where that would happen: An excellent production would never submit for one reason or another. Usually this meant games, but sometimes even the big boys would forget or screw up in some way.

I agree with Doodles, sometimes people forget to submit to the Annies. Everything is product driven....
