Oh, good god, I can't remember how many times this year I have argued with my mother about the "checking on application status" thing. Most businesses hate that nowadays; I read in a publication once (it was something at my grandparent's house... reader's Digest?) that they actually find it creepy, and unprofessional. My mother REFUSES to listen even after admitting herself that this is true in her case (she manages the office-work at a local veterinarian's clinic).

See, I always thought it seemed creepy. I mean, why bother people when they're hard at work? Glad Reader's Digest confirmed my suspicions. One thing that they DO like in modern times, however, is sending a thank-you note to the manager that interviewed you.

Really? I've yet to get one P: Although the place where I currently work likes me so much- despite the fact I'm an absolutely burnt out counselor, that they haven't laid me off- despite dropping over half the staff in the last 3 weeks. I just want to be laid off damnit!!!!!

My mother keeps telling me to get jobs or take classes that are utterly outside my fields of study (puppetry) or interests (photography). Still I suppose that's preferable to having her tell me to invest in lottery tickets or paid research studies.

Take classes in diagnosing and fixing sick cars or repairing leaky pipes and you will always have a job that pays way above flipping burgers. It may not be what you want but, if worse comes to worst, they pay a hell of a lot better than puppetry and have a lot less competition than photography.

My intent was to agree with the source material which suggests that mothers sometimes make impractical suggestions in defiance of reality, not to seek advice! I worded it poorly; I am not actually studying puppetry. But if I could have a real job doing that it'd be a worth a hypothetical pay cut over things I despise. And for the hypothetical record I am a better puppeteer than meat-mass-manipulator; I have to cook them in my oven!
