I'm more upset by what happens after the page you linked us to. I've been in a similar situation, I got jumped my 3 seventeen year olds after I turned eighteen and two had weapons. I took one away and fought back, injuring one with a broken hand and the other two ran away. I was the one arrested even though I called the police. If it wasn't for a nearby bank security camera, I was going to be charged with aggravated assault. All this is after the one injured told them he had two friends who were also hurt in the fight. I still spend 8hrs in jail and if my Mother hadn't threw a fit in the magistrates office they were going to keep me there for 28 days (the time till the trial).

It is not an "extremely small" possibility. I have been thru the system on the wrong side of the bars, and this is roughly the attitude I encountered. And I'm told it's only gotten worse since then.

Welcome to the American justice system, seriously, when I was arrested I was told I declined my right to a phone call among other things, and in the end was arrested illegally.

But hey, sitting in a cold motherfucking cell all night on concrete is pretty awesome!

In China, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and others, just sending a text message to anyone that insults the authorities, or goes against social stigmas, can put you in a prison or camp, without a trial. Your friends and family aren't allowed to know where you are, and you're not allowed to appeal it.

Maybe learn about the rest of the world before bashing the minor inconveniences of our sometimes disorganized justice system.

I wouldn't say America is TOO scary. My time in Afghanistan was more so due to the real possibility to be attacked because of the uniform I wore at the time. Compared to that, random violence kinda loses its impact.

I just read Exile - And Glory by Jerry Pournelle, written in 1974, and has sequences like this all through the book which covers possible future histories.

The big difference is that in his, Private companies start making big money in space as the US drops all access, starts going anti tech, ecofreak, and only the rich have full access to the global data network.
