Well, I'm wondering if you know any tips on shading and making certain textures, like how you draw fur on your characters.

Drawing fur isn't as hard as it sounds. Draw the round belly, and draw some jaget edge pointing downward. That is the way I draw them anyway. I hope that was helpful.
