From gaming computer to media centerin many painful steps

What are all you whipper snappers doing here...?
Most of the pain was in my back hauling wires, not setting the software up.
I just turned my old desktop into a media center in my living room. It has something like 940GBs or some other similar gonzo number for storage of videos. Given I can shrink them to about !.5 GBs or so that means more than 600 videos on the demand! Now I still need to change some configurations, like making the text readable from across the room from a 20" NTSC TV, rather than a nice, new HDTV that I'll be able to afford in, roughly, 2037.
Now if I can figure out how to make a VPN connection from my laptop to the desktop I'd be able to access them on the run, and all the bad craziness that allows. (I might have to do a really convoluted virtual machine link-through since Vista and Linux don't play well together.)
