I've read about North Korea, and even had the chance to talk to a "friend of a missionary" who smuggled a few people out. I would honestly rather live in Somalia than N. Korea.... Its funny, I just finished reading a story from the captain of USS Pueblo, which was pirated by the communist Koreans in 1968. He and the other 82 on his crew were tortured for 11 months. When they brought him to a bridge leading over the border in the DMZ to release the crew, he said that he saw that the living conditions of all the Korean citizens were actually worse than what they had been through in the prison camps. Its exactly like Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Yeah, but the missle thing is understood in many ways by analitics.
One, the most obvious is to send a message that "our leader may be dead, but we're still able to defend ourselves!".
Second thing is, that it was just a test. NK does lot's of them but, in fact, they might do these tests more often than South Korea thought. After K.J. Ill died, SK announced 5 star alert(the highest), so their patrols were intensified and in result, could saw more than they normally do. Seoul also likes to keep things quitet in what they know about NK for two obvious reasons - China and Japan, which are uneasy neighbours. China, because of the goverment, Japan, because of the war sentiments.

And I've saw few movies about NK, read quite a lot of stuff actually. Look up Yodok concentration camp or Camp 22. It's even worse than gulag's or Nazi concentration camps. Amnesty International had a yearly letter writing auction one or two weeks ago, and they wrote letters to Kim Jong Ill about Yodok CC. Adressed to the Ronery man himself, but now, since he's dead - who's gonna read them?

Thw prison camps are probably the most terrifying thing about Korea. They are in the mountains in such a way that it is impossible for anyone to see them. Im sure we have sattelites that could prove to the world how evil it is, and focus in on the camp clear enough to see the torture. But, really, I dont think theres any hope left. Kim wouldnt have read the letters anyway, and there are literally loudspeakers that blast their propaganda and military music from dawn until dusk. They even have radios that they can never turn off (like telescreens). You just cant be raised from birth and be indoctrinated... They could never change. It's like ancient Rome in a way; All the Norks are subconsciously angry at their government, but their government makes sure they never show these emotion. And, just like the Romans (and the people of "Oceania") the government sets it up in a way that they can vent their feelings, but direct them at the west, or at the south, or really any society other than theirs. They really do have a Hate Week, where they are all herded in mobs in Pyongyang, and they listen to the speaker (usually Kim Jong Il's more authoritarian-looking generals) pour out hate, and they are encouraged to scream, punch the air, foam at the mouth. They are really showing their hate for their government, but have been brainwashed in such a way that they think its our fault - The Imperialists' fault.

They dont have any hope left. I just think we need to move in and scorch the earth and salt whatevers left. There should be no life left in North Korea. The risks that their government would ever form again would be too great if we tried to "liberate" them.

Normal NK citizens people hate living in NK. There are interviews with those NK citizens that live in China or in South Korea that openly say that what we see in the west about the eternal love for their leader and NK is a fake. Who would show their hatered in a country where even walls have ears, after all? Who wouldn't cry after their leader when not crying can lead to imprisoning not only the "guilty" but also a 3 generations of his whole family(which existed in even back in a Chonson dynasty)?

Thus, normal folks in NK want to live a life where they'll work hard, but they'll get means to live by it. The assimilation is possible, but not on terms of equality, I'm afraid. NK citizens will be a 2nd class citizens if Korea will unite. They'll be at the greatest lows and they'll be a threat to every possible country they may show at, because they'd work for wages smaller than Chinese have.
And China does not want that, so as long as China's policy looks how it looks, there'll be no unification or a change, even if some higher ups in NK are pondering it. They're too scared of the big neighbour, which would rather see them at war with South Korea and the rest of the world while they'll sit quietly.

They are still officially at war with South Korea. You're right, about not destroying everything in their country, but hell, thats why I'm never going to be a general. It just pisses me off to see how brainwashed they are, and it worries me to think that the children may be completely lost.
