I played amnesia: the dark descent after THIS JACKASS

holy fuck how do you even play this game, im at that part where you are in that library stuff, you do some kind of puzzle with the books, after that you get acess to a room with a key, you get out and eventually keep moving, but then I hear things, steps, believing it's a monster I hide in an empty closet, and im like that for 30 minutes until I keep playing.
when do the monsters appear specifically?
I want to know when I have to start hiding and criying
