Needs some help...

Ok so here is the deal, I don't sleep well. It's been awhile since I have gotten a really restful sleep.
I go to bed, I wake up tired, and that's pretty much it. I hardly ever dream. My first guess is that I'm not entering
the late stages of REM sleep. Something is keeping me from going that far and I'm pretty confident that it's the TV.
I turn the volume down to where you can't here it and just leave it on the rest of the night.
But the thing is that I cannot fall asleep without it on.
I've tried on many occasions turning it off but it takes hours for me to fall asleep and then I just have to get up shortly after.
I admittedly have a great fear of the dark (I'm 20 and still afraid of the dark...how stupid is that >.>)
If my room isn't lit up enough I get scared and have to turn something on.
A night light doesn't help either as it's not bright enough to keep my mind from playing tricks on me and scaring me half to death in the middle of the night.
Every little noise in the dark freaks me out. Can't cover eyes or ears either because as soon as I do my mind says "THERE IS SOMETHING IN THE ROOM!!!! OH GOD FREAK OUT!!!"
and I get that feeling like someone is there and about to touch me or somethin...
I thought about going to the doctor but I feel it would just be a waist of time and money that I don't have. So maybe some tips or something would be helpful.
It's not that big of a deal really, been like this for years and I've learned how to deal with it.
But it would be nice to get a good nights sleep every once in awhile...

FA+

With all these other tips I got I would be surprised if I don't get a good night sleep now ^w^
I kinda like it though...
1.) Take a nice warm shower.
2.) Drink either herbal tea or warm cocoa with marshmellows (of course! XD)
3.) Lay down or sit down in a warm comfortable place
4.) Play soft soothing music.
5.) Then close your eyes and try your best to imagin yourself in the most relaxed place in the world.
6.) Go to sleep and rest up!
One thing to try would be exercise. It'll relieve stress levels and release serotonin into your body which is the feel good chemical.
Another, and this one is gonna seem weird, would be to try and rebalance your blood flow while getting in bed. Lay down and putyour legs on something so that they are higher then your body and leave them there for 10-15minutes. This will facilitate the blood redistribution that normally take place while you sleep which may help... I've done it to feel more rested on nights where I knew I wasn't gonna get much sleep. Its a trick suggested to me back when I was at ASMS, my smart person high school. This trick may or may not work for you... but can't hurt right?
Hopefully that might help!
Jk, I will give it a try though so thank you.
A sleep cycle will start when I fall asleep right? So about 40 minutes after I initially fall asleep the cycle ends and then a new one starts a few minutes later and so on and so on. And waking up at the end of the cycle should result in a more restful sleep. So at about 7 hours is when I need to wake up. Not at 8 or 9.
Also, what do you think about the suggestions left by the others that commented? Yes, No, Maybe?
Another thing is to make sure you have a regular sleep schedule.
As for the other things people mentioned.... those are ways to help get a relaxing sleep. I do get a drink of some kind before going to sleep... just not too much so I don't wake up needing to go haha.
Mostly you needa relax and not stress out since stress is the great destroyer of sleep, mental health, and physical health as well haha!
From what I understand that means I'm not going far enough under to dream and that's why I wake up tired.
Is that true? Or is it the waking up at the wrong time?
And sorry I know I'm asking a lot of questions but I figure you can give me straighter answers then google...
I actually feel more tired when I wake up and realize I've dreamed. Cause for me that means I woke up during the dream.
But that's experiences from my point of view. So I can't say that the same for everyone.
Uhh, why does the brain have to act like that? Gotta pull tricks all the time and whatnot. IM ON TO YOU AND YOUR TRICKS! *shakes head*
Anyway, Thank you my good sir you have been very helpful ^^
And thanks for putting up with me for as long as you did. YOU ARE GOOD MAN! :U
The brain is a confusing thing! As is most of the body haha.
