I feel your pain. I struggled through the Yahoo groups for a while with the same impression. There were spurts of feedback now and then, but on the whole it was pretty disappointing. I don't think people realize how much feedback means to artists, even if it is just a "nice piece" comment now and then.

Well, the whole reason I tried Yiffstar was because friends told me it was slightly better than FA for story feedback.

It's not. Someone voting your story as "1" is not feedback.

I was also told that my story about sex ninjas fighting over tentacle pits wasn't realistic enough. Look, I'm all for constructive critisicm, but sometimes it's like people go out of their way to find a problem with something. :|

I could see how people on YS would be more inclined to comment on stories, since people around here are mainly looking for art I think.

At any rate, I love where your story's going and I hope to see more soon. ;)

Those are all reasonable concerns on Yiffstar. In particular I don't like the fact that story updates have to be approved. From what I've observed, 1-bombing a story is not a common problem in YS, though no doubt it happens from time to time (probably less so since they added the requirement to register before you can rate stories, and you can only rate a story once). As for people not leaving comments, I think that's a problem just about everywhere. People complain on the FA forums about how many people fav'ed their latest work but hardly anyone left a comment. I'm guilty of that myself, but with writing at least I usually try to say a good word or two if I liked what I read. Speaking of which, I need to go comment on the second chapter of your tentacle ninja story...

Yeah, but my problem with Yiffstar is that people can tell you that your story sucked, but not WHY they thought that.

Was it not their taste? That's not really a critique; sometimes stuff just isn't your thing, but that doesn't make it a bad story.

Did they feel it was written badly? Why? THAT's what I want to hear.

I don't want to log in and see a number that tells me nothing.

FA lacks in comments too, but at least it's a 'no news is good news' scenario.

Nobody's forcing you to take the number of stars your story gets seriously. And frankly, stories don't get 1-bombed on YS. I would know. I've been there for a while.

For stories, it is way better than FA, 'cause people read your stories on YS. You'll post a story and get like 300-500 views overnight, whereas you'll get like 12 people total to read it here.

Sure, you'll get people who didn't like it. But guess what that means? People didn't like it. Most of the time when people comment on a story, it's as a reward... So don't really post anything on Yiffstar expecting everyone to tell you why it's not good, because that's not what people do there. And frankly, there's no better alternative than Yiffstar, because, like I said before, at least people are reading it.

If you want praise comments, cross your fingers; if you want constructive criticism, ask for it - they won't give it if you don't ask... at least in my experience.

Lol, I use YiffStar... I have in the past had some decent success there getting feedback, but in all honesty I practically had to beg for it. (even wrote up a long spiel on rating stories in hopes that it would inspire some people to do so properly... it's here: http://hoxdna.org/yiffstar/phpbb/vi.....dc461ff34ac1be , though good luck pointing people to it.) Lately, I've gotten less than before, so yea, I can see it's really not working out so well.

BTW, I've discovered that it's possible to accidentally rate a story a 0 when trying to leave another rating (if you select a rating and click OK without having javascript turned on, that is the result) so if your rating gets suddenly bombed, it could be someone without javascript who didn't realize what they were doing.

Approval doesn't take too long, fortunately, but I do think the require approval for modifications is a bit overboard... like the time I realized I had posted an older version instead of the one I had removed a spelling error from...

Really thuogh, YS can have its advantages... for one thing, the people that go there are looking for stories, while here... most people don't have the patience to read, and just disregard it. Also, the search and indexing features are superior, so you can make it easier for people interested in your kind of writing to find it.

So I gave Yiffstar another try.

It's not so bad once you give it time. I still have a lot of problems with it, but it works. At the very least, it's given CC some good exposure.
