Oh, pffft! What, he's just starting now? Rudy had to resign from a lack of popularity, and he was there from the beginning...
Godspeed, Nader. Your heart is in the right place.
I can't disagree with that. The man's done plenty of things that are good. He can be an absolute ass-cannister too, and this is one such example of self-serving tripe.
I dont think I have the words to describe what a gigantic moron the man has become by actively undermining the things he's trying to support through sheer moronic pride.
Nailed, man. He's either blinded by his own light or deliberately pissing in the punchbowl. Either way, at this moment in our history, it's unforgivable.
Someday, I hope we *do* have more than two parties. I'd rather have a coalition-style government. I think it would mean greater participation and greater representation, and breed an atmosphere of compromise (you've got no choice with coalitions). We're better off than Mexico, but sometimes I think we aren't better off by much.
We'll have a Green president one of these days, I reckon.
I don't think he'll really damage Democrat votes though. The Sierra Club thing about McCain's voting record on environmental stuff (of late, McCain's been unavailable whenever anything vaguely environmental crops up for a vote) was a wee bit more upsetting this morning.
I've come to expect that of McCain. I remember the Keating Five scandal. The man's a corporate whore.
I think you're right. Third time's the charm, Ralphie Boy, and I doubt he'll steal any Democratic thunder this round. Still? He's a self-obsessed fucker for doing it.
He'll get used for that, I think, but the real drawma will swirl around the Democratic candidate, no matter who it is. Hillary? Get ready for the misogyny and old-time Clinton attacks. Obama? They'll bring out the racism and "Osama/Obama" bullshit. A black guy and a woman. What more could the cave dwellers of our nation want? All of their prejudices wrapped up in one pretty package.
He's gone from being a crusader to being a nuisance, and it's his own goddamn fault.
Nader hates admitting he might be wrong, which is why he hardly ever does it. (I'm not sure he ever apologized about the Corvair.) The video game thing was just plain stupid. It's the reason I want Obama over Hillary: she was part of that stupid cadre, too.
Okay, for some reason I actually got off a tangent when replying to you. I guess I got all fired up, its not aimed at you or anyone in particular, I guess you could say its aimed at everyone but I just kinda ranted. Instead of deleting it I think it's pretty relevant to the topic so I will just leave it.
[rant]
You mean the Internet isn't already heavily monitored by the government illegally with the patriot act? Not to mention the RIAA and ISP's watching what we download. Also, what happened to activists? Now we just talk amongst ourselves, mostly on the very Internet they monitor, but we never go out in the streets and march anymore. We need to learn from the 60's and 70's on how to properly voice our opinions. Maybe its just that gamers are to lazy to get off there chairs and to fat to march, but if anything is to be changed we, the people have to change it. The government doesn't rule us, we rule the government. Its a sad day when its people are afraid of the government because they should fear its people.
[/rant]
You don't need to apologize, man, there's nothing in your rant with which I would take issue. The apathy of the average American has a lot to do with the stresses of our society today. It's the reason I feel like slapping people when they moan about how they're not going to vote. People around the world are dodging bullets and machetes to cast a ballot, and people here can't be bothered to walk down the goddamn street? Much less protest. "Free Speech Zones"? That should be a JOKE, not a reality.
Since the 80s there's been a steady erosion of everything I consider important about being an American. Corporations have all the power again. The number of lobbyists in our capital has exploded. The Constitution's been used like toilet paper. Jobs and money have poured out of us like blood from an open artery, and our living standards have plummeted. It's been a war on our middle class, as it was during the time of the Railroad tycoons (aka Robber Barons) and the Guilded Age (oddly enough, the GOP was in power THEN, too, and it was largely their economic decisions that led to the Great Depression). Health care has gotten completely out of control. De-regulation has given us Tyco, Enron, and a laundry list of other, massive imbroglios that you and I will get to pay for. Our roads, our power grid, our phone lines have gone to crap. But hey, we've gotten a whole bunch of billionaires out of the deal! And a greater chasm between rich and poor than in any other first-world nation!
See? My turn to rant, and we're ranting about very similar things. Participate, participate, that's what we can do, and make sure the politicians hear us. Teddy Roosevelt was a corporate-head GOP boy before he became the park-making anti-corporate man he's known for being. They represent US. The government SHOULD fear its people. WE OWN THEM. It's time we make ourselves heard.
Amen man (or woman...sorry I don't know T_T). I know that they will not take me down without a fight. I will be the frist to stand up for what I beleive, whether thats marching with a sign or gun. Hopefully it doesn't come down to that but I am not afraid of my goverment. I am only afraid of its stupidity and those who follow blindly.
Nader should be credited for certain positive stuffs. He was a pioneer for consumer rights: commodities with labels telling you what they contain, making safety a major public issue with regard to everything from food to cars, that sort of thing. Nader deserves kudos for raising public awareness about what we eat and the items we use. He's been a crusader for good in the past. He's also gotten himself hitched to some stupid stuff (his crusade against video games) and hasn't backed down even when he could have done so with some grace.
He did us no good by running in the past two presidential election cycles, and now it feels like a self-serving joke. He could do actual GOOD if he were to throw his weight behind the Democratic candidate, but instead he's going to be run, himself. Egotistical little tit.
And by adding himself to the ballet he could actually hurt his party. He could split the votes enough between the too that a republican wins. The last god damn thing I want to see in the White House is another fing republican. Just because the Democratic vote is so torn between different candidates a republican may just win.
There is a kind of balance, at least. Nader on the one hand, Paul on the other. I think Paul *will* prove to be a problem for the GOP come election time, if he's still running. Nobody seems to dig McCain.
And...I know this will sound weird, but...your icon makes me think of a girl's pubes as she squeezes her thighs together. I don't know what to make of that, other than I'm not getting any. :P
The sadly funny thing? Back when Perot was running, I considered him a crazy bat-sack. Now? He was right about the Giant Sucking Sound. I give him props, even though I still think he's a loonybird; the stuff he warned about back in the 90s turned out to be spot on.
God I haven't thought of the "Giant Sucking Sound" in years!
Ross really had 2 problems. His ears, and his personality. (His ideas were sound!) Sadly running for president is nothing more than a giant popularity contest. AKA maybe if he went on late night and played the sax or something he would have gotten more votes. (Think about it!)
Hehehe.. If he wins I should sue him. I want my kick starter back on my motorcycle and for the billion or so bandages I needed because of the auto shutoff bar on the fucking lawnmower. :p
You are right thou, he did get some insanely stupid things fixed. The lawn mower thing I can understand because a lot of younger people cut the grass for their folks as chores and or a summer job.
But he just goes off the frigging deep end too far.
I mean think about it, one idiot in million had too much to drink, and whacked his shin when his foot slipped of the kick start and thus lost his balance pulling his Harley on top of himself.... and now no one can have a kick starter on a motorcycle? Oh that makes fucking sense. NOT
Anyone that's ever owned a motorbike knows that sometimes your foot slips off the kick-start. (Walked in a little oil in the parking-lot nine times out of ten, or mud, some sand, hell maybe you didn't have your foot just right...) The point is you learn to expect it and deal with it.
Sorry folks I just had to. Nader pisses me off to no end.
Like I said, the man just won't back down, even when you could rub his nose in the idiocy of his arguments. It's scary how easily people can be drawn into the tide (and I would include myself in that number) rather than taking a minute to think things through.
That's probably the worst example of the pendulum swing: externalizing of responsibility, at the end of the sword-tip of lawsuits. I agree with the idea that corporations should be held accountable for their poor design choices; but there IS a line you cross when you try to make everything safe for those among us without the sense God granted a turnip.
Gore said he'd rather work somewhere he can make a difference, iirc. Apparently he's seen the political gridlock the office of the president can wind up in. :P
Yeah, but he's statistically irrelevant. He got .38% of the vote in 2004, and he'll get less this time around. I think a Dee Snider/Blackie Lawless ticket would get more votes.
Ralph Nader was, once upon a time, a Man of the People, a Champion of the Little Guy. This was back in the 60s and 70s. He was one of the folks who pushed the idea of consumer rights on a VERY unwilling corporate America (like labels telling you what a snack is made of, the calories it contains and so on). Safety was a big deal for him. Even then he went a little (?!) crazy. It was the first sign of Ego Ginormous, a man who won't back down even when his face is rubbed in his mistakes. The Corvair was a good example. Nader took that poor car and dragged it through the mud.
As the years went by, he got more power and influence, and it continued to flow to his head. My ex was a fundraiser for two decades, and she told me what it was like to try and work with Nader's people. NOT fun. You need a united front when confronting the gubbermint, and having Nader or other big egos grandstanding does NOT help your presentation. Nader's people have a "my way or the highway" attitude. Unhelpful.
Then came the 2000 election. Some would say he helped GWB get into office. I used to think that, but really, if that were the case, so did Pat Buchanan. He ran a loud campaign ("No more Republicrats!" was a memorable slogan) but mostly sapped voters from the progressive side. That means, as a Green candidate, Ralph mostly took votes from Gore. (Pat had a similar effect on the GOP, but it was so low as to be non-existent.) The real thievery of 2000 can be traced to the Carlyle Group and the Reagan/Bush appointees to the Supreme Court, who prevented a recount and thus gave us Shrub as a Prez. Gore lacked the will or the desire to fight it. And the following eight years have been a mess.
De Wikipedia will give you a good Nader overview, I think. The man did a lot of good early on. He's just gotten old, crusty and stinky. Apparently no one in his inner circle has the guts to tell him so. :P
That's my very prejudiced view of the matter. It's worth listening to some other viewpoints.
Godspeed, Nader. Your heart is in the right place.

I could go on and on..

BTW, my dad owned a Corvair, covertable, yellow of all colors. He loved it.
*hugs*
You should put a full body picture of him on a long pillow and then beat the crap out of it with a bat. May help you feel better.
Then again, I'll probably get sketching tonight and completely forget about it 'til tomorrow morning. Knowing me.....
...but that's irrelavent. :D
(Zenith is also Acme, so does that mean he makes cartoon equipment that actually works?)
I WOULD VOTE FOR THAT TICKET.
As it is, a little piece of my heart will be going to the Goldwater/Miller campaign.
Jim Ward is SO FUNNY I can't even believe it.
You gotta admit....there wouldn't be a ticket anywhere that has as much cleavage. Imagine if Randy Rhoades was their secretary of state!!
His Pat Robertson always slays me. :D
