laser printers are more expensive, but if you do lots of printing regularly it will save you money in the long run
...check out a local 2nd hand / thrift store and find a dirt-cheap dot matrix printer for $10... spend that much on ribbon at office supply store and you might just get through school with all that. Save up for a FAR better printer later! All-in-ones are the bane of existence, followed just behind $50 colour / laser printers... that soak you like crazy for inks / drum replacements.
If you want a GOOD printer, especially colour, you'll want to pay MORE up-front so you can get one with multiple colour reservoirs. (I have a Canon Pixma IP6700D that worked perfectly well out-of-the-box with Ubuntu Linux.)

A laser printer will cost a little more up front but the cost per page is much lower than inkjet. Also, the toner that comes with them is always the "economy" model; you can usually get a high-capacity toner that holds 3 or 4 times as much toner as the original, really making the cost over time worth it.
For cheap black and white prints, I use an HP Laserjet 1100 that I salvaged from the trash at work several years ago. It prints at 600dpi and works just fine for letters, copies, grayscale pictures, and so on. I've never had to put a new toner in it, although I really don't print that much. A new printer of this model or an equivalent won't cost that much but I don't know what the toners cost. For high quality color prints I have a Konica Minolta 2400W. It prints up to 2400x600dpi, just about photo quality. I got it about 6 years ago with a great promotion that made it only $150 after rebate and in-store discount. The toners aren't too bad for price depending on where you go for them. I bought a set of all 4 colors, high capacity, for $123 plus shipping. Laser printers can have hidden costs like replacing the imaging drum and/or the fuser, but those are usually good for something like 45,000 pages.
Hope this helps!
Also, regarding that Konica Minolta printer, a very nice feature is that when it says a toner is low or empty, you can keep printing despite the error message. Some other brands will actually refuse to quit when it says toner is out, even if there is enough toner left in the cartridge for another thousand pages. So, add that as an extra point towards the Konica Minolta brand.
