Yeah, the books are firstly written for kids, so the villains are one-dimensional, and the bad guys are the same species and he never mixes it up, but since you read the first book in a 22-book series, of course it is going to be a little cheesy. The books do follow a set formula (heck, someone made a flowchart of events that can be applied to every book) but that doesn't change things. It is kinda like the Legend of Zelda series, there are many different stories, but they all take place in a separate time in the same fictional world, so the first book released is actually the 10th story if you line them up on the timeline.

Give it another go, and try a different book in the series. If you don't like it, you don't like it. We can't force you to.

You say its for kids, yet the plot was about an evil overlord who seeks to destroy or enslave the entire populace of Redwall. Somehow, that doesn't sound kid friendly to me.

I started reading the books when I was 13, So I was kind of young then... Teens to young adults then? Some gruesome things do happen, but the heroes always win and everything is returned to normal. Like I said, it follows a formula, and your mileage may vary.

Things don't always go back to "Normal". Some of the characters are permanently changed due to the things that happened, and one of the most revered heroes (Martin) lost what was most important to him.

I haven't read the series in a long time, so some of the details are blurry. I suggest you read "The Taggerung" or "High Rhulain" since the main characters are Otters, and they don't deal with the Redwall Abby area as much as some of the others.

Think of it this way Sveyes, the Redwall series was written for those with little or no vision. The stories are highly descriptive, fun to read (as long as you are willing to suspend your belief), and full of wonderful 2 dimensional characters.

Bruce Willis? Look, two dimensional characters, no vision, and things that require you to put effort to suspend disbelief are things anyone can create.

Not Bruce Willis, think of G.C., As for the Redwall series, the author, Brian Jacques wrote the books for the children at a school for the blind where he used to deliver milk. I basically enjoy the books for the rich detail that Jacques wrote into the stories. Yes some of Jacques characters where shallow and two-dimensional, but you have to admit, he was a talented writer and story-teller. It doesn't help the series any that they were badly represented by some uber crappy animation.

The animation was quite good. And by "Some" being shallow, you mean almost all. And there's such a thing as "Too much detail". Tolkien proved that to me.

I never said that Jacques put too much info into his stories, he was able to draw the reader into his world by the details he put into the stories, the riddles that he created (some were easy, some were mediocre, some were hard, and some were brain busters) that had you (the reader) trying to solve them, and the unique languages for some of the beasts. He did put more effort into detailing the major heroes and villains, but never tried to do the same with the dibbuns, minor heroes, villains and general cast.

Jim Butcher did all of that. And WAY better.

I thought it was pretty good overall. Though I never did like what some have called "specism." That is, some species (mostly herbivores and omnivores) always being good and others (mostly carnivores) always being evil.

Given the choice, I would choose S. Andrew Swann's Moreau series. It's a series set in the last half of this century a fwe decades after genetic science has created anthro animals. Such as Nohar Rajasthan, a tiger whose species was originally enginerred for the Indian Special Forces.
