So today I ended up pulling guard because there was a bunch of locals who were upset because some NATO dude burned a Qur'an....and if you've seen the news report (which has a shot of them throwing rocks at my base) they were really going at us hard.....and there's a good chance this shit will happen again tomorrow....wonderful -__-

I know that all of you guys over there are doing the best you can and really do want to make a difference, and don't get discouraged by a crowd mentality. Sadly, lack of education, employment, and overall frustration with life is going to lead to ugly incident on the part of the locals against the troops.
I hope that things in Afghanistan will end sooner than later, and let us know if you need anything from Stateside. With the Postal Service having flat rate rates to APOs getting you and your fellow troops what you all want is pretty affordable.
Well, if this means anything, the fact remains that in this world it is hard to make everyone let alone anyone happy. As long as you are doing what is right and are not hurting yourself or others, then you are all right.
Well, I really hope that the military gives you folks a break during your time back home especially after the tours of duty that you all have done. Enjoy Europe while you can because so many countries are quite close to you. If you can, then definitely head over to Luxembourg which should not be too far from where you are. If you are so inclined, post some pictures of your adventures because Berlin and other European cities are really neat to see!
As for Pic's I will ask my GF (she's the photo bug, not me) to send me all the pics she took.....which i think is over 207 lol
Dresden is a nice city, and I hope you were able to see the rebuilt cathedral. From what I understand, British airmen who had firebombed Dresden during WWII were instrumental in helping rebuild the old church and restore it to its former glory. Especially with Dresden being mostly destroyed during the war I am sure the city even now probably has a very East German feel to it since it was they who remade it into a typical communist city of the times.
Yeah, while you are on Uncle Sam's dime do your best to check out Europe because going to Europe on your own would be quite expensive. There was this one guy I knew who was in the Army and was stationed in Greenland during the Cold War. Apparently, he had an offer to be rotated to West Germany which he turned down because he was too busy partying in Greenland. He always regretted that decision because had he gone to West Germany, then he would have been attached to some General and would have seen most of Europe courtesy of the US Government!
And Dresden was a very nice city to go see and yeah it did have a very E G feel to it but overall a very cool place to go see, there's a lot of old buildings to see.
And you gotta take advantage of stuff like that because the Army will fuck you over and hardly has the common decency to give you a reach around, but when it does you gotta enjoy it while you can.......God I think that was the most accurate/ funny analogy I've ever made XD
It is great that you had enjoyed Dresden! You are right that Dresden has a mix between the old East Germany and pre-war Germany. One of the few German cities in the west of the country that I can say that had survived the Second World War pretty intact is Heidelburg, and you should definitely check that place out if you have not already. I know that there was a big US military installation there back in the days, and it used to be the HQ of the 7th Army if I am not mistaken. In either case, Heidelberg is well worth the trip especially Bismarck Square. Also, not too far down the Autobahn is Darmstadt, and that is also a nice city to do a day trip. The five fingered tower and the Russian Orthodox Church in Darmstadt are must sees in that place. Spring/Summer in Darmstadt is particularly nice.
I completely agree with you that taking advantage of the Army's benefits is important especially while you are overseas and have access to the COLA. I like the last sentence of your post above, and you definitely have a way with words!
Dresden was cool.....not oly was it a mix of east and west but it was also a mix of old and modern...there were a lot of old buildings and areas and a lot of new age stuff as well....it is a very cool place to go see if you got the time and money
Why thank you, i do like to fancy myself a writer lol
