Basically I could explain, but it's easier if you were to see it.
The pen tool when you use it, creates a line, of course.. but it also uses tangent lines, the lines that can be created off the initial point location by holding down the left mouse button.. think of the tangents as MAGNETS.. they kinda cause the line to magnetically curve toward that tangent line.
So for example, if you hold the mouse and pull away from where you click, you create a magnetic tangent line.. so when you make yer next point, the line closest to the tangents will bend/curve in that direction.
