New Bunny....

Well, I ended up taking in a 'rescue' at the last rabbit show I went to. He's a 8 year old chocolate Jersey Wooly buck named Hershey. His breeder is cutting back because she just doesn't have time to take care of the rabbits... Which I understand. He was free because she said he won't breed anymore, and just wants to cuddle the females. I got him in hopes of giving my other house rabbit, Ichi a buddy... No luck, she attacked him :(
He was in pretty rough shape... He must have had some horrendous matting that she had taken off because his skin was all angry, bald, and red in places. She didn't get it all... I brushed out what I could, took scissors to him... His feet were so badly matted I had to shave them. He looks pretty funny heh... I also gave him a bath on his bottom because it was pretty urine scalded. He was looking better yesterday, and much better today. His skin doesn't look all red and angry now for the most part. I noticed his little man parts looked kinda irritated and when he peeded he seems uncomfortable so I did an inspection...
This is where it starts to get a little gross... For those of you who don't know rabbit anatomy, rabbits kinda have sheaths, and their 'parts' are right beside each other. I checked his little folds because I know that gunk can build up there, but I thought I had washed it a few days ago.... I found a fucking maggot. Grosses thing ever. All my years of having rabbits, I've NEVER had that happen. So I killed it, looks like there was only one THANKFULLY. I treated it, and hopefully it will get better... Just EWEWEW. He must have been even nastier before I got him for that to happen, I'm pretty sure it was a fly maggot, he must have been in so much pain because it was biting him :(
Needless to say, I'm glad I took him in. If I hadn't he may have died. I do, but don't blame the breeder... She's cutting back on rabbits for a reason, but still it makes me sad that he had to go through this :( I'm going to keep him until I find him a really, really good home. If I don't find one, I'll just keep him and let him live in comfort for the rest of his days.

Augh, that's horrible. Poor little guy. Was the breeder you got him from one of those backyard hoarder animal mill type deals? Cause it sounds like he was in REALLY bad shape when you got him. Like, maybe call animal services on her kind of bad shape.

She actually has VERY nice show rabbits... She's known all over the country for them. But I think things have gotten out of hand and she has too many to handle, that's why she was selling quite a few. If I had bought him from her, I would have more of a problem, but he was free... As the saying goes, nothing in life is free. I'm not sure exactly where she lives, and I know she does live WAY out in the country... It wasn't purposeful, I know she loves her bunnies.

Ah, okay. Well, at least she's getting rid of them if she can't take care of all of them. I hope he gets better!
