Some awesome older games that you may never have heard of
13 years ago
So, I've played a lot of games over the years, and with everyone focused on a lot of the new games (I.E ME3) I figured I'd ask some folks about their favorite older games (been wanting to do this for a while).
I also mean games from before the year 2000.
here are some of my favs, per console. Anyone else got any favs that people have probably never heard of?
SEGA:
Phantasy Star IV: My most Favorite game ever. Great RPG, with all the good fixins!
Crusader of Centy: A decent LoZ competetor. Top down, action based, with a decent storyline and some cool gameplay!
Shining Force 2: If you are into tactical RPGs, this is your game! SF1 is ok too, but never made the impression that SF2 did for me.
SNES:
Terranigma: Ok, so I had never heard of this game till I randomly played it on an emulator. It freaking ROCKS. Great gameplay, with a hell of a storyline. Is a top down RPG/action game, kinda like zelda.
Seiken Densetsu 3:Secret of Mana 2... that never came over to the states. Available only via emulator in english. I liked it loads better than Secret of Mana 1, because of the extra options and class paths.
PC games:
Dungeon Master: The mother of all RPGs. It's from the 80s, but has the stuff that we expect in great games today: customization, inventory management, real time effects, and exploration. DM2 takes it a step further as well with overground places and a town with shops. One of my favorite game series of all time.
Strife: The very first FPS/RPG I ever played. I was amazed by it! I love the final weapon (you have to assemble it as you go through the story) and the places you go and things you do! kick ass!
System Shock 2: The second FPS/RPG i ever played. A space horror game, which Bioshock is the 'spiritual successor' of. I think Bioshock is a great game, to be sure, but imo SS2 is waaaaay better. Bioshock just couldnt scare me like SS2 did.
There were some games from the commodore64 that I played too... but i was so young that I can't remember their names, so alas, I must exclude them.

FA+

But my growing urge to play the bad guy in a 'dungeon management' system was fulfilled when i got my paws on Evil Genius. That game was sweeeet, but too new for me to put on my oldschool list XD
PS2: Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2- rebuild the world rpg's, good storyline and good graphics
Gameboy Advance: GoldenSun- Classic RPG with Final Fantasy level graphics. challenging puzzles and interesting storyline and likeable characters
And Golden sun was ok. I seem to remember its main draw was the really fancy effect graphics in combat. Was good stuff.
Though, all these games were past the year 2000- i was really referring to games that predated the PSX, though it was a 90s console.
Downloaded Terranigma, played a bit of it so far, eager to have a chunk of time to play it since it never was released in the States, along with Seiken Densetsu 3. Eagerly looking forward to those two.
My current faves that I'm not sure others have heard of:
NES:
Super Dodge Ball. One of the few sports games I like due to having special moves and such, with the same art style as River City Ransom
Ys I & II. These were also not released in the states, at least not on the NES, I had played Ys III on the SNES, so getting to play these is great.
Rockin' Kats. Silly cartoony furry platformer about a jazz player cat looking to save his girlfriend from a gangster bulldog.
SNES:
Secret of Evermore. If you're a fan of Secret of Mana, give this a try. Same style and menu system, but those are the only similarities. Interesting magic system and kinda short, but fun.
Actraiser. Awesome blend of side scrolling action and Sim-style city building.
Uniracers. Silly racing game where you are a unicycle. Not on a unicycle. You ARE a unicycle.
There are a whole bunch more I've been dabbling in, and surprisingly, these old classics are holding my attention much better than most of the other current gen games I have to play/finish playing...
The only dodge ball ive heard of was on the GBA, lol, and I've heard a lot about Ys. And Secret of Evermore is no strangers to me XD
I was never a super huge fan of Phantasy Star but I do have to admit that I played each one from start to finish on the Sega.
SNES:
Wario's Woods - Really fun puzzle game
Legend of the Mystical Ninja - Epic RPG/Platformer game by Konami, really challenging too
NES:
Mighty Bomb Jack - Pretty fun platformer, kinda confusing and hard though.
Faxanadu - Boy, lemme tell ya...this game is what Zelda 2 should have been. It plays pretty much exactly like Zelda 2, except there's no world map, and it's not nearly as confusing. I mean, Zelda 2 is so confusing I swear they made it to sell Nintendo Power. Faxanadu is more linear (to an extent) so you never sit there scratching your head, "where do I go now??". The only downside is the bad password system. (what with uppercase and lowercase letters looking like other letters, not to mention being like, 30 letters long in the first place)
Genesis:
YS III Wanderers from YS - This game was actually on a LOT of different consoles, but the Genesis version is the best. (unless you can afford a TurboGrafix CD! :P) Really fuckin' awesome platformer RPG (it plays just like Zelda 2), with some of the best RPG music ever made, even to this day.
Rocket Knight Adventures / Sparkster - Two unique platformers by Konami. The first one is a LOT better than the 2nd though. Again, epic music and a real challenge as well.
Cool Spot - Fun little platformer featuring the 7up Spot. Great controls, fun levels, awesome music.
And I loved the Legend of the Mystical Ninja.
The moment though that I read "The Mystical Ninja", the sound effects from the game started playing. I love the music in it.
mystical ninja starring goemon for the N64 is up on that top ten list of my fav games of all time. Rocket knight got a rerelease on the newer consoles (i played a demo, was cool) and cool spot was on my high school's computers XD- one of the most popular games that people would play, lol
decap attack
bio hazard
Thought that only happened to physical carts getting damaged! XD
But here I am, missing the old days.
PC: Paradroid, Impossible Mission (pre-patch, where it really was impossible), the Kroz games, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, the old SSI Dungeons and Dragons games (The ones in the gold boxes), and Sid Meyer's Covert Action.
Guess the console: Air-Sea Battle, Galaxian, Krull, Moon Patrol and Pac Man.
and i also miss the carmen sandiego games. I used to love playing them as a kid!
I've heard of these.
Thought you were gonna say games that were actually old :p
*goes to play on the Commodore 64 like a sad old retro hippy*
Awesome choices all around though, Nil loves a lady with taste :3
The Legend of Oasis (Sega Saturn): A prequel to Beyond Oasis with equally strong gameplay and more detailed hand-drawn sprites and backgrounds. (Video.)
Skitchin' (Sega Genesis): From the people who brought you Road Rash. It's Road Rash... on roller blades! (Video)
Space Harrier (Sega Master System): Space Harrier is a pretty cool guy. Eh flies and shoots and doesnt afraid of anything. (Video)
Wonder Boy 3 (Sega Master System): What is the secret of his power? A side-scroller action-RPG where the player transforms into various animals. (Video)
Yes, I was a Sega child.
it's available on multiple platforms now, too- steam has it, and the wii. And probably the others too.
My dad had space harrier on his old Amiga. It used to freak me out for some reason.
And I played wonderboy on one of sega's rereleases... it was ok XD
Oh lord. Loved those games. The first time I got hold of the first, I could not stop playing. Loved so many of the characters, the story. It's a pretty simple game, but I just really loved it back then.
Number two matched that feel and more, that was bliss all over again! Hell, those games mighta been one of the first ones to make me love furry characters. Loved how many of them looked in it for the graphics that were available.
I loved the music in the 2nd one, too.
NES: Mario(of course), Adventure Island, Chip'n Dale, Duck Tales, Contra, Donkey Kong (of Course)
SNES: Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (cant remember much more besides the ones everyone obviously knows)
PC: Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem 3D, M1 Tank Platoon, Top Gun
Fun game for PSX: Brigandine.
Also, Suikoden, though most people have heard about that.
The Bard's Tale (the first one!) was pretty classic.
I still break out Civ 2 sometimes.
Starflight and Starflight 2 for the PC were old-school fantastic.
and yeah, lotsa people have played suikoden (myself included) I also tried suikoden 2 and 3. They were good games :)
Other fun games:
Bard's Tale (again).
Wizardry.
King's Quest and Space Quest.
I still have a collection of 20 Infocom text games I'd like to try again.
Monster Rancher (the first one) was surprisingly fun. I didn't like the other games in the series.
Obviously I liked the Final Fantasy games on the SNES and PSX.
For the Commodore 64:
Telenguard!
Donkey Kong (which is the first ever appearance of the hero who would later be bought by Nintendo and named Mario)
FROGGER XD
For Windows 3.1:
Star Trek 25th Anniversary - a great game, until the second to last mission, which requires math most adults aren't even capable of, IMHO, much less a teenager in middle school.
Earthsiege (1 and 2) - 2 only failed near the end, where a glitch found in almost every release of the game caused the mission to irrevocably fail immediately upon entering the battlefield, regardless of how well you performed up until them.
Space Shuttle Simulator - an awesome program that allowed one to do all sorts of things, from launch, through completing mission assignments out in space, to re-entry and landing. Also a glitched program, as one mission would never give me a successful completion (recovering a satellite and bringing it back to the ground) despite how perfectly I managed to end up doing it. Which meant I could never progress to the night landings and instrument approach landing missions. Dissapointment doesn't even begin to cover it.
Myst!
For the Sega Saturn:
Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels
The Panzer Dragoon serries
Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge
I also didn't know panzer dragoon had more than one game @.@
system shock 2: I do believe this predates when I first started 3-D gaming, I know "OF" it, but I never played it
Oldest pc game I can remember? Either snake bite (on the blue 3 1/2" floppy) or the original sim city, our package had both the 5 1/4" and the 3 1/2" versions. From there... uh... jump ahead to about 1997 for "Comanche 3" and the freespace 2 demo disc in 1999, then there was a period in shooters, mainly unreal tournament 2004, and nightfire, then back to the best game I felt before the current generation: freelancer (2003). Now, I define the generation of PC games by the graphics as you can drive a fleet of garbage trucks inbetween the graphical capabilities of nightfire and doom3, and that's kinda my point. Life before direct X 9, and certainly before direct X 10. Remember when they didn't add shaders so that textures would have a gradient on them? Oh yeah... that's what us youngin's think is the boundary between old and new.
Though for console games... donkey kong country. I never got past that stupid oil drum level in the refinery. I think the next games I played after that were jak & daxter, ratchet & clank and 007 agent under fire.
...so sue me, ok? my parents didn't want me to grow up as a videogame hermit. go figure, they made a porn fiend out of me instead. am I bummed that I missed so much in the way of gaming history? not really, I mean games seem to be either stupidly easy or brutally hard when you approach them from a adult perspective, I'm.... shall we say, equipped to handle most things games can throw at me. I have a solid grasp of the buttons on every single console I've ever picked up (with the exception of pre-gamecube nintendo, how the hell do you hold a n64 controller?) and I've played nearly every genre other then field sports, so why is it that I struggle madly when I play a game on medium difficulty? I mean, for fuck's sake, I've played over 300 games for at least 20 minutes each (castlevania:LOS and similar were forced) but I just seem to keep doing the doom "ahh! run away and find health!" maneuver in every bloody game, from fallout NV to modern warfare to metal gear solid 4 *sigh* I guess I'm just getting old.
A graymuzzle once said: you know you're a graymuzzle when you remember how things used to be different. He also said that you know you're a graymuzzle when you're thrilled they changed the flavor of tums. They did. I'm thrilled. I'm not legal drinking age yet, but I appear to be a 40-year old already, virgin too. Oh fuck....
bah, I need to go to bed, I'll shake my cane at you some other time.
~Motoko
Y's 3: Wanderers From Y's... HARD AS FUCK game to begin with.
Speaking of hard games. Playing the original Ninja Gaiden games on the NES? SO MUCH RAGE! Comparing that to today's games... they were much more difficult back in the day.
This just makes me wonder if you ever come across a game called Actraiser.
Just for reference http://www.gametrailers.com/video/v.....ewattack/23437
that game it was so good!
But, these are some of the games I can just go and dig out any time I want. I wanna see if you can dig up anything that you still have.
And actraiser has been mentioned already! looks interesting! XD
As for Actraiser... its just too awesome so it needs to be mentioned again!
