Hey guys, before I get into the computer thing, I just wanted to let everyone know that I got a job. I am now a driver for the Victoria Carriage Tours, meaning I drive a horse drawn carriage downtown :3
It's an amazing job, I love it, the horses are some of the happiest, most honest horses I have ever met. having worked at a lot of trail riding places I am used to dude horses, but these guys have never had an inexperienced rider jerking on them, so they are just fantastic. <3
Plus they are all *huge* percherons, shires and clydesdales. :)
Anyway, I am just letting everyone knows so they understand when I appear to disappear for a couple days. Between school, work, my horses, and my social life my computer time is going to be hardcore reduced, which is prolly a good thing ;p
So commissioners and potential commissioners please be patient! I've got a lot on my plate.
Anyway, onto the computer issue. I am planning to buy myself a nice desktop PC. I am currently doing all my art, gaming and homework on a Toshiba satellite, which is a nice enough computer, but just not powerful enough for what I need. I have been looking around, I don't want to spent more then 1000$ cnd total for a god quality LCD screen, graphics card and computer. It would be fantastic if I could find a computer with a decent graphics card already in it, but I don't think that is too likely.
I definitely want a computer with at least 2gb of ramm(expandable to at least 4), a 2.5 GHz or more processor and 300 or more gb of hard drive space.
Anyway would you guys be able to recommend some brands or models of graphics cards, LCD screen and desktop PCs that would fit my budget and work for what I need it for, which is art(obviously) mostly in photoshop, step mania(DDR game) and other games.
So far I have figured by best bet for a good brand is HP, I have heard a lot of good about there desktops, is that bullshit??
thanks!

Pretty cool to be working with the horses, the *big* horses, he he
If you have a friend who can help you do it (or do it for you as a favor) that works great!
If you're used to building one yourself, go for that, if not you're more than fine buying a pre-built one and tossing in your own video card.
If it was me I would go with Dell. Long time fan, unexceptional, but reliable. I almost always suggest them to my clients, at least when looking for desktops. What I buy from them is the computer itself, plus included things like keyboard, etc. What I don't buy is the monitor, video card, any additional memory, extra hard drive, and extra software like MS Office. You have better selection and prices buying this stuff on Newegg. https://www.newegg.com Go with the standard 1 year warranty (in home repair) which comes free. Desktop parts are so cheap to replace that if anything breaks after that you're better off buying the part yourself. So without further ado...
System 1
Dell Dimension 531
AMD x2 4000+
1gb ram
250gb HD
DVD+/-RW drive
Keyboard/mouse
Vista Home Premium
$359
System 2
Dell Dimension 530
Intel Core Duo 2 E4500
1gb ram
320gb HD
DVD+/-RW drive
Keyboard/Mouse
Vista Home Premium
$459
You can upgrade most anything on these systems, including the CPU. The Intel you can even put in a quad-core, not sure about the AMD, but you can upgrade to a much faster chip on that one. One thing to note is that both these systems have slots for vga cards, but only to single slot cards, depending on if you game a lot this might affect you, but there are still excellent cards these days (like the 3850) that are single slot.
The add-ons:
Monitor:
Since you're an artist, go big! This is what I'm using currently and is a great deal:
Chimei 22" Widescreen $230
