Today we have lost a pioneer of visual media. Jean Giraud, AKA Moebius, was one of France's foremost visual artists working throughout the latter half of the 20th century. His style was unique, influencing science-fiction, fantasy and comics. You can see it in Alien, Star Wars, Dune, Tron, Heavy Metal, The Fifth Element... even manga like Akira and Nausicaa owe elements of their visual style to him.
For those of you that haven't heard of him, I highly recommend finding some of his work, like Airtight Garage, The Incal and even Silver Surfer: Requiem if you're a little leery about jumping headfirst into European comics.
Moebius was a man that did wonderful things in comics, things that are unique to comics, things that would lose their power if they were ever translated into other media. Like Jack Kirby or Frank Frazetta, he changed the way we saw the world. I'm very sad to see him gone.
