is this common in multiplayer games?

so another mass effect journal. I've been messing around with the multiplayer, and there is a store that sells these various forms of blind purchase upgrades, which I guess makes sense. The part that has me confused is that I can either buy them with credits (fictional money you get by winning missions) or with bioware points (which are just scrip that is bought with real money).
Is this sort of scheme common in online multiplayer? Do people really pay money for in game mystery boxes?

Don't worry, if you survive four full matches in Bronze games, you'll have enough for the most expensive pack, anyway. So it doesn't matter <3
Was just a little perplexed by the possibility of people paying money to skip 1 mission worth of effort.
