Best wishes for an uneventful surgery, a speedy recovery and a humane physical therapist (...not sure there is such a thing). I had my left shoulder operated on at the end of December, it wasn't too bad (Aleve became my pain meds of choice)...the boredom was the worst part by far. The doctor should have told my mother and my mate to put a chain on me just long enough to go to the bathroom since I am a terrible patient and went back to work earlier than my doctor probably would have liked...but it kept the pile-oh-bad from being too hideous. I would advise against going to any conventions within the first couple of weeks after surgery, people have a nasty habit of hitting the injured shoulder by walking into you (insert Murphy's Law joke here). I did and they did.

If you don't mind my asking, what sort of shoulder surgery? I had to have cartilage reattached in my left shoulder.

I have an anterior Bankart tear (front part of the glenoid cartilage coming off) that needs to be fixed and the capsule of ligaments tightened. There's also a Hill-Sachs lesion on the Glenoid humerus but the surgeon said that shouldn't be a problem since it's minor (and I assume it was from the first dislocation 7 years ago and it never gave me problems). There might be a minor SLAP tear but it's up to the surgeon to determine whether it's there or bad enough.

Looks like you either had a SLAP or bankart tear, how long did you have to wear a sling?

Sounds like a variant of what I had to have fixed. I had the cartilage on the front and top of my shoulder tore away from the bone (no clue how), the surgery was to reattach it.

Six weeks in the sling but my experience wasn't exactly normal. The normal is four to six weeks with PT starting around 2 weeks with passive manipulation by the therapist. I am hyper flexible (nothing like being told there isn't much holding the bones together...by someone who has seen the shoulder from the inside) so I was in the sling for six weeks and then some and no PT until after I got out of the sling.

SLAP tear?

SLAP tear is the tear on the top, Bankart is to the front or back I think. Gah, well I'm hyperflexible too so sdfh we'll see how this goes.

Nice to find someone else with hyperflexibility. It seems a rather uncommon condition.

Here's hoping the surgery itself is uneventful and your recovery rapid.

btw was it acute, as in a condition that warranted quick surgical intervention? I dislocated mine 7 years ago and 2 years ago, it's just been weaker and felt less stable, and according to the doctor surgery isn't 100% necessary but I decided to get it fixed anyways...

Not really acute, my doctor talked about trying PT first for another few months but I had been doing PT for six to eight months at that point for both shoulders so surgery made more sense...and it turned out to be worse than the MRI showed. I decided better to get it fixed since I didn't think those sorts of tears healed. Better to be in a lot of pain for a very short while than a far bit of pain for a long while (…and then probably need surgery anyway) was my logic.

Btw I don't really know if it's hyperflexibility but my shoulders are pretty loose.

If its just your shoulders, count yourself lucky, all my joints are loose.

Put some Windex on it.

Then you'll be all good to go. But it's good that you're hyper flexible at least. I hope your recovery goes well man! And way interesting to hear what's going on in detail.
