Around here if a dog tried something like that it'd probably get shot pretty quick.

I'm an avid dog lover, a professional dog groomer and I have basically built my life around dogs.

If a dog went for one of my animals, even one of my meat rabbits, you can bet I'd shoot 'em. In my state, it's a death sentence anyways...a dog kills a domesticated animal, they are put down here, no second chances.

I don't think it's that harsh here, but when you can have pronghorns walking down main street, you want to make sure pets stay pets, and wildlife stay wildlife.

Good gods!!! That is terrible, I am SO sorry for your friend. I know how devastating the loss of good stock is...my own rabbitry is suffering atm due to a rash of issues and reluctant does. But that pales in comparison to a dog attack!!!

I don't know what her housing or living situation is but a good sturdy shed or barn might help. I personally live on a single acre in an area where there are a lot of loose (and vicious) dogs and teens who seem to like torturing/stealing animals, so I've taken to keeping all my rabbits in my basement. I have my meat breeders in a large colony-room all to themselves and I'm presently revamping my show rabbit cages so they'll be hanging cages...once I get them hung properly that is! In my own home they're safe from attack, but it does have it's disadvantages, too.

Please do pass along my sympathies to your friend. Have they called the police? Police involvement should happen.

She had some REALLY nice Jersey Woolies, and some other breeds... Just a few months ago she drove 9 hours to get some great stock.

She has it fenced, but there was a weak spot... I worry all the time because mine aren't fenced, but they are on a porch and I can hear ANYTHING that happens out there. If one of them get agitated and thump I know it.

I'm not sure she has, she lives in a pretty rural area, so I'm not sure if it would help much... Could have been just a random pack of stray dogs.

Even if they are random strays, police involvement would benefit her...that way it is on record.

Yeah :( I'm not sure who all she lost, but she had friends up her way(she's about 2 hours away) that helped out. I don't want to get into the details with her for now, she's still pretty upset.

I never understood why people would just let their animals run lose. They can cause damage to other animals, property and ruin an ecosystem. Not to mention the danger to the animal itself.

It drives me crazy too... I've heard that some people let their dogs out to run at night... If your dog needs to run, you should run with it... Do you both some good. I keep my cats inside too, I'm terrified of them getting hurt.

The owners should be fined.

Omg I know!!! My cats seem to think they want outside, but we keep them inside 24/7. There's a poor little gray and white stray that I've started feeding... I have the feeling that somebody moved and left him behind. I saw him outside staring at our cats in the window, went out to see him and noticed how skinny and dirty the poor little guy was :(

wtf! Quebec (where I come from) is the #1 place in Canada (or was it North America?) for pet abandonment. Kitty doesn't match the curtains in the new place? Out you go! I am ashamed to live here.

But, on the subject of cats outside... ugh. I was hanging out with my parents the other day and they were bragging their kitten became a cat because it brought something home. If it makes any sense, think of it this way...good cat owners like you help to keep Quebec from being even more vile for the number of abandoned animals. :) You make the place suck less by merely being awesome. :)

All my cats stay inside...they'd die outside I'm sure. We have a lot of vicious loose dogs, racoons and cruel teenagers in my neighborhood...not to mention cars who don't even slow down when a critter is in the road. :(

Oh, I don't have cats XD I have birds, which are way cooler and since they're black they match with anything! lol

Me too! I am a dog person...and I also have cats, and rodents, and lagomorphs, and reptiles...and I love them all. No dog gets a "free pass" because they are inherently canine! :P

That's what gets me, they don't kill because they are hungry. I could forgive a bit if they were starving... But they kill just to kill because they think it's fun.

You ever seen a dog play with a squeaky toy? They grab them and shake them side to side really fast. That would snap a neck of a smaller animal. A dog will even take one of their own and kill it. Like a German Shepherd with a Chihuahua. The German Shepherd is not going to see a Chihuahua as one of their own. The German Shepherd will see that as a toy to play with. And just like the squeaky toy. That is what will happen to the Chihuahua.

Exactly... That's why I don't own a dog. If we ever get a dog, it's going to have to be one special dog lol!! But at the same time, I can't fault an animal if it's -bred- to hunt. But a German Shepherd should never kill unless it's protecting... A GS killing for fun is a very poorly bred animal.

I was really using the German Shepherd as a size example of a bigger dog. Thats all. And yes if they kill for fun then they are indeed poorly bred.

Part of it is the domestication process. Domesticated animals retain juvenile behaviours into adulthood, such as the play-til-it-dies thing...which is part of why people must not let their dogs roam. You wouldn't let a six-week-old puppy out of your sight, so why would anyone let an "adult" dog run loose?! They are basically adult in body, INFANT in mind.

As the owner of a tiny Chihuahua, I hear you. Many dogs are great with her, they play with her nicely because they read her as a fellow dog...I've seen her happily and safely play with dogs in excess of 150 pounds! BUT...most dogs? I would not allow her to greet, because to them she is a toy to be shook and squeaked. D:

A friend of mine has a Chihuahua that she keeps inside and she also has a black lab she keeps out side. She would have to watch over the Chihuahua if it was outside. Otherwise the Lab will catch it like as if it was a rat and walk off with it.

You have several options for you bunny's protection, and your friends. Wood fencing encasing the cages, basically build a small barn. Elevate the cages to a degree if they are caged. Also Both of you should invest in sonic deterrents. Fairly cheap, and can be found at most tractor supply stores. Basically, what you want is a high frequency audio fence. You may not be able to hear it, but the dogs sure can. There are chemical scent repellents you could concoct but those are a tad more complicated. Then there's always the option of deterrent flora, but that runs the risk of harming the bunnys if they are uncaged. There are plenty of options. And when all else fails... a good rocking chair and a shotgun sitting on the porch work too.

She had fencing, but the dog found a weak spot... Also fencing/barn building is EXPENSIVE. Have you priced wood fencing? Just to do our small yard ourselves its going to cost around $2000. Downside of those deterrents are that they could freak the rabbits too. Next time, if she catches the dog in the act, it's gonna get shot heh.

I agree %100. If someone doesn't control their animal and it's a threat to you or your property/pets, good shoot. You don't know the dog, you don't know what it's going to do, and it's not allowed to do whatever it wants.

There's currently an uproar in Denmark. Someone shot a dog that was on their property (The fact that this is big news should tell you a lot about Denmark.) The owners of the dog are crying to every media outlet that exists that the owner is a crazy gun nut and oh my god they're so dangerous and psychopathic and won't somebody think of the children?

He had been warning them for two years to keep their dog on their property. He had chased it off over 20 times. He had gone to the police over the matter 3 times.

He kept rabbits, small deer, and small dogs on his property.

There's like two dog packs that roam my neighborhood and i hate it because one actually attacks one of my dogs. Most of the dogs a very large dogs and I have two small dogs. What I hate is that someone was walking down our street and the dog packs like to chase cars and people and they actually called the police because they had a stroller with them too! One of the dog packs chased them but instead of the owners getting blamed our dogs did! Our dogs stay inside but we let them outside and we watch them because of the attacks that's been going on on one of our dogs and my dog sammie is terrified of people! I was so mad and told them that it was not our dogs. We control our dogs and we don't let our dogs out without being supervised.
