Gender and Furriness

I've never really thought about this before, but I was recently chatting with an aquaintance of mine who's doing a survey about furries for a school paper, and he said this:
David: It's good to get a female perspective as well...
me: lol, are most the surveys you got from males?
David: about 85%
me: Heh, that's interesting
David: yeah... but, the fandom is mostly male-dominated, really
I was a bit surprised to hear him say this, because most of the furry artists I admire, and probably most of the furry artists I know, are female. But that could possibly be just a coincidence. What do you guys think? Is the fandom male-dominated?

BTW, when you say 'school paper' do you mean the Statesman or just for his class?
