Determining An Artist's Gender.

General
I'm not sure how to start this line of thinking. It's not just that it's hard to guess a person's actual gender, but also their sexual preference. People peg me as a dude based on my art right up until they see my name. Then they get confused. I've even had a couple of advances obvious enough that even I realised that they were trying to ask me out. (Which is a whole other thing...)
I have a hard time guessing gender but not sexuality because people I know are pretty open about what they want to fuck. Determining their layout is the hard part. Several girls I know are perfectly fine with drawing sexy women. Some to the point that you start to wonder if they have leanings. (Well, other people do. I know them well enough to know that they know what sells.) (It's sexy women.)
I feel like if I laid out a random assortment of images people couldn't correctly guess gender, but they might do well guessing their sexual preference.
On the internet we basically "look" like whatever gender our sexual stereotypes match. If you draw a lot of sexy girls people assume you're a dude and so on.
It's interesting because if you don't match up you get a look in on what it's like to be what you aren't. I think that's interesting.

FA+

That is, of course, if they're actually female and not pretending.
I was just thinking about this very subject today.
...not to mention things can sometimes get even more confusing on FA- There's a lot of transgender or transexual artists around here, and you gotta find out or ask how they'd like to be identified, or if you're just misinterpreting a particular character or attitude.
Myself, I never wanted to even be tempted to try to mislead people, so I always just staple "Gender- Male" onto my profile :p
Enough time on FA exposes you to just about every single possible fetish under the sun and ones you never knew existed.
Meanwhile, changing your species listing to something other than "Dude" might help your situation. And just to make sure I understand... are girls or gay guys trying to hit on you?
(BTW, Between Failures is a sweet comic!)
In real life gay men love me. T^T
Thanks I'm glad you like it. XD
I first recognized you because of Between Failures, and based on Between Failures, I assumed you were a guy.
Then I find you here on FA, and still go under the assumption you're a guy.
Then I see this journal you post here, which start making me thinking maybe you're a girl.
Then you reply to me, and I get all confused and befuddled and decide to do some hunting.
I go to the "About" page on Between Failures, and was able to confirm you like girls, so now mind's on "Straight Guy or Lesbian".
I check your Twitter, see the name "Jackie", and realize it could go either way. I now needed more concrete evidence.
I find your Tumblr... still nothing obvious, but then find your DA.
And THERE is where I find that your actual name is Thomas, and therefore a definite straight guy.
And even when I made my first comment, I was posting under the potential possibility that you may even be a girl, until I start going... wait...
So yeah, without a photo or a name, or one those little symbols that helps with gender identification (You have probably seen them by now), telling gender online is REALLY difficult since one's art style does not indicate one's gender.
It just doesn't.
I mean
For ages, I have used internet communication. And have good friends I've no clue what their physical gender is. Usually it comes up after a year or so... someone brings up periods, and not the grammatical sort.
Mostly, I've decided I don't exactly care if someone far distant is male or female... because my wang does not stretch very far. Barely crosses a county line.. So, really, what difference does it make?
But then some people actually have some queer (as in weird) persona/fursona that can confuse yourself about the artists...
I try to ask at times, other times, I leave a margin on the gender, but a hole, if it were to not to be.

I'm not quite clear on what makes them different but they are.
Also looking at the colouring can help, but you hafta be at it for a while.
(there are only a few that have confused me)
