We adopted him from an adoption event being held at our local mall by our state animal control center. It was totally spontaneous, we were just going to look at all the dogs for the fun of it, but this little guy just yanked my heartstrings. He's predominantly dachshund but I'm sure he's got chihuahua and a bit of whippet in him as well.
He’s an older dog, about 8 y/o hence the gray around his muzzle, and he’s very underweight from mistreatment at his last owner’s hands. Apparently he was dumped at the pound when the family moved and not in good condition. He has dander as well, and kennel cough, but those are easily taken care of. I took him to the vet's today and got a round of antibiotics for the kennel cough, some ear cleaner for his crusty ear (which I didn't notice but the vet did), and some prescription food supplements that are very high calorie to help him put on some weight. I'm shooting for 4 lbs for him to gain but no more than that.
We’re focusing on getting him plumped-out and healthy atm. He’s a wonderful little dog whom I think deserves a good home like the one my family and I have to offer. His name at the pound was “Chico”, but that didn’t suit him nor did he respond to it. His new name is “Gir”, yes, from Invader Zim! DOOOOOOM!!! We got him a nice little collar that suits him beautifully and a perfect bone-shaped name tag! We also bought him his own bed, food and water dishes (they're ceramic, very pretty) and I have given him a nice little baby blanket for him to forever sleep with.
He LOVES to be held and cuddled, I'm thinking of getting him another bed for my bedroom so he can sleep in there at night rather than in the living room. I'm really bonding to him, he's such a sweet little dog. He is a bit shy and meek, but not to the point where it's a problem, he's opening up more and more day by day, we've only had him a day and he's already opened up significantly and attached himself to my heel. He even has a favorite pee-spot in the front yard!
Truly, Gir is the best Easter present I have ever gotten, or will ever get!!
