Yesterday on the History Channel there was a Modern Marvels episode on Dogs.
However, through-out the whole episode, it mainly stated facts on wolves, and then would on rare occasion mention things about dogs.
Some of these facts on wolves I always knew, but some are new finds for me. I'd like to share some knowledge on wolves with you all.
The exact date wolves were first domesticated is unknown, but is likely between 2 and 5 hundred thousand years ago. This is well over half of mankind's existence, and when man first began. The first reported dogs appeared 14,000 years ago.
Wolves are social animals, and live in packs. Average pack size includes 6 adult wolves. Wolves communicate short distances with barks and growls, and long distances, with howls, which is also the same means of dogs communication.
There has only been 1 healthy wolf attack that ended in a man being hurt, and killed over the past 100 years. There are over 100 attacks by domestic dogs that result in the death of both owners and strangers each year.
Wolves are being systematically hunted to extinction by man, this is the result of both hate and fear mankind have fostered at Europe after AD 500. Mankind feared wolves as a threat to crops and children, though there has never been records of such fear having ever been justified or accurate.
Wolves are the one animal found both in the wild and captivity that can tell mankind much about dogs and their origins.
