It's good to explain. It's not always as black and white as "keeping personal and professional life seperate". Things just don't work that way, sometimes. It's entirely understandable to be affected and have your performance drop for reasons beyond your control. But as long as people know why, then you won't get nasty notes saying "Y U no finished my pic?" Granted, some people's production might increase when affected by such things, but that's because each individual person deals with such matters in their own way. Some slow down and take the time to reflect. Others speed up, keeping themselves busy so as not to breakdown. But if you were to say to me that you weren't going to let this affect you and that you would push it aside to complete your work... then I'd say there's probably something wrong with you.

I'm sorry for your loss and hope they have left you with plenty of good memories to enjoy in their absence.
