Networking with other furry musicians...or anyone. ><
13 years ago
It shouldn't bug me as much as it does but...I'm just gonna vent a bit.
I don't consider myself the best at what I do, but I try real hard. I follow a large amount of other musicians whose works I've really enjoyed, that inspire me to make higher quality work.
In the past I've tried numerous times to talk to these musicians for advice, help with promoting tracks of mine to try to get my name out there in the furry community, etc. Conversation usually goes about like this:
ME: "Hi, I love your music, I've downloaded/bought your albums and I think they are really top notch!"
THEM: "Well thanks."
ME: "If you get some time, can you take a look at some of my work and tell me what you think? I could use some help in (specified area) and I'd love some of your feed back."
THEM: "Sure! I'll do that!"
And then I never ever hear from them again. This is both online and at cons I've been to: I've taken time to create CDs of my stuff and hand them out with promises of people who say they will listen, but I'm sure they're probably just ending up in the trash or forgotten in some dusty bin for crap.
I don't want to come off like I'm trying to push my music onto people, but as silly as it sounds, it is so incredibly difficult to get ANYONE to sit down and part with three minutes of their time to listen to one track, or at the most an hour or so to listen to an album. I really ran into this when I finished my "Time" album, which was partially why I got really sad and stop composing for a long time, but I think I'm running into it again now.
So, what am I doing wrong? Are there other ways I can try to network with other established musicians on furaffinity without sounding like a poor hungry dog asking for scraps or handouts?
Any advice? I'm at my wit's end.

I know I'm pretty busy myself and I try my best to listen too other musicians including you and I think I'll start some journals spotlighting other up and coming artists, even though I can't really say I'm very popular either (my submitted music averages 35 views only).
My best advice is to keep hammering away and improve your expertise. Even if you sub,it a song and it doesn't get many views, it's still a learning experience and adds to your portfolio, ^^
Well, I for one absolutely love your music. I could try to help if you'd like, but I'm less experienced and I'm not the same type of musician as you are genre-wise. But I can try if you want- having an extra pair of ears is never a bad thing! But anyway, if at anytime you want to trade music/exchange comments, I'd be game for it.
If nothing else, know you do always have some few that are happy to listen to your music.
Also, I'm almost always open to listening to music (even though I definitely spend more than an hour listening to tracks sometimes).
If you're here looking for numbers, you might be on the wrong site. The simple truth is that people come here looking for art, it's quick and easy. Trying to get them to actually take the time to listen to musicians here is a bit of a chore and a losing battle. I'm not saying that's ideal, but it's sort of the way it is.
If you're simply trying to network with other artists and to get feedback, that's pretty easy to do on average I feel. I've actually met a good few of the people I've met on here in person, and they're fun to collaborate with and have good creative input when you ask them for it. However, I think in general if someone feels like you're only talking to them to hustle your music onto them... it's harder to start a relationship on that kind of basis.
If you're just looking for creative feedback and a community here, you can definitely find that. If you're here trying to play a numbers game with page-views however, it might be the wrong place. There's lots of little things you can do to promote exposure: collaborate, interact with others, submit to the musician spotlight... But overall, I feel like you should just make the music you like. Gradually, people who like what you're creating will come your way, and you can start having a tight-knit community of people who really care about what you're doing. It just takes time. (And, as a note it does seem like you're doing alright at this point for musicians on here; 90 views on your last submission ain't nothing to scoff at).
I quite like your music; got your albums when I heard them, and been listening to the stuff you've uploaded since then. And you've definitely got a solid foundation and style. I would just say worry less about the size of the audience, and more about the music itself, because that's what we-the-listeners are here for. If your only goal is to create a large following however, a lot of my views up there ^ are a moot point. If it's just a popularity thing for ya, you can do things like upload lots of covers, people on average are more liable to click on something they know already than something strange and foreign.
I hope this doesn't come off too blunt, but I felt that you should at least have one reply that functioned as an objective 'state of affairs' deal. Best of luck with however you decide to approach it.
What i take issue with is when I speak to others and they tell me they wouldn't mind taking a look at my work, and then they close off communications with me. It makes me feel like I annoyed them somehow, and then I feel bad, and then I'm stuck wondering what I did to offend. That makes me feel like a peon ;_;
Believe me, I'm going to continue growing my library and writing tracks for a while!
Yea, the only way I feel that you can effectively get around that sort of thing is that you usually have to become friends with people first. If that's a priority and you're getting along well, then people usually don't mind/have interest in checking out your stuff and helping out where they can. If you try to point them towards your music up front (Even with your super polite synopsis in the original journal post) it kind of makes it feel more like work, something you're doing for someone else and not so much as a mutual thing. A lot of people don't mind that sort of thing. But a lot of people also do. Sort of a coin toss for internet relationships on that front.
Anyways, if you want to talk music, feel free to hit me up. I'm using Reaper and FL currently... and a stupid amount of plug-ins.
THEM: "Well thanks."
ME: "If you get some time, can you take a look at some of my work and tell me what you think? I could use some help in (specified area) and I'd love some of your feed back."
THEM: "Sure! I'll do that!"
And then I never ever hear from them again
I could try helping out if you want! I use a different program than you, is one of the problems (I think you use FLstudio, yeah?) but we can sure as heck talk VSTs! I've been curious what ones you use and stuff! We can talk loops, too, I dunno if you use any. x3 Note me if you're interested and want my AIM or something. I'm on there sometimes! There is the fact that I'm not really that good, though. My mixing is awful, for instance, so I dunno how much any feedback I could give, when you've got like /really/ good mixing skills. xD

Yeah, that one is one I have a problem with, too. x.x; I don't know how to really... get my name out there. I have no idea how people like Foxamoore or RenardV got so popular. Even though I make jokes as to them having artist friends or getting porn-y commisions to boost popularity, I don't actually think that is the entire case, although it honestly might help. :\ Sorry that I'm not much help, having the same issue, really. :S
WE SHOULD FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO A COLLAB. :O
I hope I can get to talk to you guys more!!
Oh my God, you're a male me! D:
But in all seriousness, it's always nice to meet someone new! I don't ever have too much to say, but it's nice to say it to someone friendly when I have somethin' to say at all! x3
Anywho, I wish I could help ya out with your dilemma. Personally, I do enjoy your music, and I do like being able to comment on each of the submitted pieces like I do with my buddy :yagamifoxclaw:. Not just to offer due praise, but to also offer suggestions on current or future pieces, and even point out things I noticed about certain songs or albums. And I certainly don't wish to see any of that music on any sort of decline. If it helps any, I'll do what I can to at least send more listeners your way, and hopefully someone will be willing to stay connected with you in regards to your work. Also, sometimes its not a bad thing to humbly ask for help...even if it sometimes seems like one is "begging for scraps". At least you're not like "My work is awesome, so you should bow down before me" or anything. XD
