Should try Malwarebytes. It's free and actually better than some of the ones you have to pay for. There is a version of Malwarebytes that costs money, but it only has a couple of extra features. I use the free one, and it is awesome.

yeah, but malwarebytes is mostly for scans and such D: i would never trust it as my sole source for virus protection. he could try AVAST. the free version is better than most paid antivirus programs i've seen and it checks all sorts of stuff constantly for great protection ^^

Avast sucks. It's what the school computers have. The Seriously, it got hit with something that MB can get rid of easily, but Avast couldn't do anything about it, and I couldn't install MB because the administrative password. The IT guys came in and put MB on here because Avast just sucks.

well than someone on the school computers was being a dumbass =/ I've had avast for years and its caught several things. does the school let it update everyday? or is it one of those push-down systems where the school computers get re-flashed by a server image every time their booted up, so such programs are basically useless anyway?

It updates constantly. The virus was easy to get rid of, but Avast couldn't do crap. We needed a better tool. If I had Avast, I'd only trust it for the site ratings. As for actual protection I'd stick to what I know works better. I know from experience and professional reviews.

Trial is 30 days, but you can keep it and keep scanning as long as you want. It is much more efficient at removing infections than quite a few you have to pay for. Really, this school has Avast, and it doesn't really do a good job... It doesn't block enough despite updating everyday, and as for scanning, it hardly detects a thing. http://www.malwarebytes.org/product.....lwarebytes_pro It finds stuff most others usually miss. Free version doesn't block sites, but the scan is so good, it doesn't matter because if you get something, it can just get rid of it easily. If it is being blocked, just use Rkill. Seriously, rkill and Mbam are totally awesome together, and then, if you really want to be sure you got rid of it, use Ccleaner. Rkill and Ccleaner are not virus removers at all, but Rkill terminates anything that the computer doesn't need, and tricks the trojans into shutting off so you can run a scan (some trojans block all virus scans, so Rkill is rather helpful no matter what you use). Ccleaner is meant for clearing history and registry that get left behind after deleting or uninstalling stuff. I use it whenever I'm done using any scanner just because some trojans only need a registry left to come back, so with Ccleaner being used right after, you are guaranteed to get rid of anything still left, harmful or not.

I know all this because my family are idiots with computers and I usually end up having to get them working again... Last time I was home, the computer kept crashing and running ultra slow. Ran the scanner they had, it found nothing. Ran Mbam, it found 57 infections. Computer ran smooth after it was done. Rkill is only needed if your scanning tool is being blocked. Ccleaner isn't needed, but I use it because I just like to make sure I got every last trace. You probably won't need rkill or ccleaner at all. I just do because my brothers are idiots and contract just about every virus known to man on our computer.

ah, personally I use norton 360, it works very well for my comp and it keeps everything out. I have not had a problem with it at all. Not to meantion I was told in a computer class that it is more efficient to use bought programs...Norton thus far has not failed me. McAfee however, never ever use it.

It really does...gave me months of pain.

All it did was make my computer run worse, and it was a pain in the balls trying to uninstall. It did nothing to protect either. It actually made removing stuff harder

Well, lemme put it this way...Malwarebytes completely saved my computer after AVG gave me two trojans. And my college's ITS department recommends it highly. And yes, bought programs are USUALLY better than free programs, but if all you have is a choice of no antivirus, or a free one, I have several people that swear by AVAST, including some computer techies.

well, if you don't want to pay, that is a good combo. biases aside, the effectiveness of any security is of course, mostly based on the user. and don't get me wrong, malwarebytes CAN detect a absolute SHITLOAD of stuff. but it won't do that automatically unless its the trial, or paid version. as for avast, if your a normal browsing type or even a careful browsing type (never a bad thing these days, whichever one), avast is pretty decent at blocking a lot of stuff. in the end though, its your choice ^^

can't really help ya there sadly =/ i've heard some stuff from friends before about how it can detect stuff, but not do anything about it, and bad customer support. BUT, that's 2nd hand knowledge so don't quote me on that as i've never used norton ^^;

I've actually used Norton myself too, and I hated it, so I guess it really is just based off the user~

well so far it has done well with keeping my computer working great...I have not had problems but then again I do try to stay safe on the net.
