The backpack recovered at the scene included the following contents:
- 7" promo single of "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" by Split Enz
- One paperback copy of The Otters of Rydale by Edmund K. Tinsley (1961 printing)
- Cheque book in the name of [REDACTED]
- Two Bic Cristal ballpoint pens, caps heavily chewed
- One pack of Winfield Blue cigarettes, containing 12 cigarettes and piece of chewing gum wadded up in foil

You set a rough geographic location while leaving the specific locale wide open, a rough time period while only narrowing it down to the last 33 years or so, and a hint that something has gone wrong without giving away exactly what.
It's a bit Hemmingway-esque. I'm impressed.

Also, I wonder if it's significant that the backpack's owner was trying to quit smoking.
The use of the spelling "cheque" could also be a red herring since even though the contents suggest the owner was from somewhere in Australia or New Zealand, the report could be from the UK.
That's what's so ingeniously tantalizing about the piece though. It gives you just enough to narrow the possibilities down, but not enough to give you a decisive snapshot of the who, what, where, and why.
