I don't dislike it, but I enjoy it most on semi-feral characters such as those drawn by the likes of Narse and Lando. For the average furry, I prefer a human penis touched up with a bit of fur-coloring.

Well, not the kind that disappear because the book isn't adult-rated, but yeah. Less detailed on the head and shaft, and sometimes with a red gradient down the length.

You could always just look at other artists' drawn pictures to use as reference, to make it less awkward.

As for myself(even though I have no male characters), I only like them as an aesthetic, in addition to the character itself.

I've thought about it, but art can be stylised and all. I'm not really sure how to explain, but I think that a representation of something and the original thing aren't really the same. Like learning to draw flowers by looking at someone's drawing instead at looking at the flower itself, and missing details that the artist changed for style.

I'm kind of a genitalia avoider! I like sex scenes but I normally like to draw characters more modestly. So when I do draw genitalia it's usually when they are partly hidden from being in use at the time, and then it's usually human-ish. I've always had this idea that when a creature "evolves" to a human-like state (walking upright and talking and having a culture and technology) it's genitalia would also simplify down into something that would make sense for human-like creatures to have.

For example, canine animals stays kind of tied to get better chances of pregnancy.
So in a more human shape, they wouldn't really need it since sexual intercouse wouldn't happen the same way...

Both points are valid, and would also explain why some character would have different genitals!

Exactly! :3 A creature's genitalia have a lot to do with its social structure and how they mate. Wolves/dogs for instance mate where there is a lot of competition, so they have the tie-ing to make sure that no other wolf or doggy gets his little sperm soldiers in there before pregnancy can happen. Apes and monkeys, though, have more human-like genitalia because, like humans, they tend to mate a whole bunch of times with different partners, so a small, non-fancy genitalia setup is better for getting in and out quick so lots of partners can have a go. In other words, wolves and dogs would be no fun at a sex orgy, but then they also wouldn't want to throw one. Humans and other primates though, love a sex party.

And rambling is great, it's very artistic!

I concider myself open minded, with preferences. That's mostly why I do these discussion journals C: I really like seeing other people's opinion on things, and try and understand better what people like about things I'm not into. Everyone might not have the same definition of the word, but to me it means to be able to respect things, even when you don't approve. (though for me it stops when anything's well being is uh... in danger for lack of a better word)

And I guess there it still depends on how we see the point of our life. Taking myself as an example, the thing I'd fight for would be to live longer, since I have no intent on creating a new generation after myself. Maybe it's selfish, but I want my life to be mine, and I don't want to force an other life to begin.

I think when the art is about sex and the sensual feelings behind it, the exotic shapes of certain animal genitalia would give that much more pleasure.

Other times some people prefer the differences, so it can be seen as a small fetish on it's own.

Other times it can be for realism. As anthropomorphism dictates, its an animal with human features. And as such, for example, a wolf's penis has a knot and for realism you could keep that feature within art.

There's a multitude of reasons, and for myself, there's a few of these behind my preference.

Quite, most people know Bad Dragon and their odd assortment of toys. This basically stems for peoples preference in the animalistic genitalia.

And one thing the fandom is not short on is variety. As you hypothesised: different sensations, which would come with the variety and mix-and-matching you can do with all the numerous fictional and non-fictional species used in the fandom.

One other question I'd have is..

It could be both really. There's never a definitive reason for these sorts of things. Whether it be the exotic nature or the bestial nature people like and fetishise over it.

It's aesthetic, you're making a half or more animal being, why leave off with human bits? At least have a sheath if you're doing naughty stuff, otherwise it's of no concern.

I do see some consideration for choosing a fursona too though, one reason I chose a canine was the fact that they tie and produce large amounts. The tie was more important though, and in some ways shows how I'd prefer to make love, holding tight and "sticking around" for a while to make it more than just sex.

easthetic wise, I still find human genitals more pleasing to look at, but that is still personal opinion!

I like some aspects and dislike other aspects. Really wonky-looking (dolphin, deer, etc.) genitalia are things I find fuckugly and do not like. Canine and horse sets aren't too bad. I generally don't like the look of a sheath, it just looks odd to me. Though a knot isn't too bad, nor is the flared head of a horse's.

My character may have a human set, but it's scaled in proportion to what (I believe) would be roughly the size of the animal's if it were human size. (AKA large. XD Might have him scaled down at least a little more next time I can afford a revision.)

Some people realize that size isn't everything, especially when you have something like a knot or flare that hits the important spots.
