Popularity and attention-grabbing journals...BLAH!!!
I'm getting tired of all these popularity-grabbing journals, saying "just watch me, post a journal, and show me a link to your journal, and you'll be entered to win a picture/commission/cash money". I guess as far as viral marketing goes it's not the worst, but...blah. It just strikes me as a sort of spam, really. Maybe slightly better than the spam I get everyday in my email inboxes. In my opinion, let word spread naturally out of skill and endeavor of posted artwork.

I don't really think it's a bad thing... it's pretty one-sided in that usually the person hosting the contest will see much more benefit than even the winner, let alone all the non-winners, but that tends to be fairly obvious and there's still a rather fair and equitable thing - otherwise people wouldn't really enter to begin with.
But I can see how "Promote me in your journal!" can seem like a very artificial way to gain popularity and.. I guess I don't like to play along. If I recommend someone it's because I want to, not because I have a chance to get something free out of it. It kind of feels like being bought off (only with a very small chance of actually getting the benefit).
Don't get me wrong, I'm getting pissed off of them, too, (spammin') but I think they should be still able to present their 'advertisement' somewhere where it's orginized. And journals is not one of those places.
I don't really look at journals often, so I can't say I'm particularly affected.
