Dad diagnosed with malignant cancer

Aio's chitterings...
I called my dad Saturday to check up on him. I do this weekly after he had the glacostomy (sp?) bag put in and didn't heal properly. He had the bag put in cause of deterioration of his colon. Not going into detail with that one. Anyways, this time when I called him, asking to see what the results of his latest test were, I was presented with this news. Apparently they found something around his colon that is cancer and is malignant. I'm not sure how long he has left, he didn't seem worried but I'm not sure if that is for my sake. They start him on chemo (again) immediately. He has been making all the arrangements for finances for my mom. It's kinda depressing to talk about this over the phone and not in person. He's finally retiring medically, something I begged him to do for the past five years.
So this is where I am. Half of me is upset at the news, the other half feels 'odd' because I've seen him in near constant pain for the past decade.
Anyone have any thoughts?
