Hmm what to do..on one hand guns are good until you need to reload..but melee..have to wait for a horde of who knows how many to get close before you can start smacking them around!

If your goal is to survive, aren't you trying to avoid having any contact with them at all? Ideally you and your trusty crowbar will never see the wonderful gore of a smashed skull. If, on the other hand, you have to fight, it's much better to not attract every zombie within earshot with the oh so distinct sounds of gunfire.

That makes a lot of sense, unfortunately no one survives forever!! L4D 2 DLC!!

The only reason for that is because survivors get hungry too, and in this particular crowd, that's more dangerous than zeds.
